Hello all,

I was curious if anybody is running a 4n Motorsport turbo kit? I think they've specialized in s55, but I saw they're about to launch an n55 kit for e-chassis (my platform) that looks pretty interesting. I haven't heard much about them, and google hasn't revealed many build threads for me, so I thought I'd reach out to the s55 crowd to see what peoples' thoughts are on their s55 kits, and hopefully somebody can chime in with some personal experiences👍

Thanks guys!

It's been a minute, just thought I'd bump this to see if anybody had picked up a 4n kit, or had any news to share about it?

I am always super wary of low volume production kits. I say low production as I don't come accross a bunch of N54 guys running that kit. I believe low volume is screaming for a fitment issue. I have zero experience with 4N. It could be fine for all I know.

As this was posted in August or 2022 before single O2 was available I would like to see the o2 sensor placement on the n54 kits. There still is a reason to run 2 o2s vs a single with DI.

Using a prefabbed merge it may not be the easiest to add o2s to it and put them in the right place, which is why I bring it up.

Yeah, I'm wary for these reasons too. Wary, but hopeful because a big EFR would be awesome. I'm hoping somebody will post up a thread for details. I've seen an F80 guy's thread on a different forum, but obviously different platform (though very similar) and not many installation details other than some fab work was needed to tie the 4" downpipe into his exhaust. I'm n55, so at least I don't need to worry about the O2 sensor piece.

What I'd really like to know:

-Downpipe? Does he offer an e-chassis style DP or do I need to customize my mid-pipes to fit his DP?

-Water pump? Does it need repositioning like with Speedtech? If so, does kit include necessary brackets, etc. to move it?

-Water pipe? Does kit include plumbing to replace stock water pipe between block and water pump?

-Engine mount bracket? Does kit work with stock engine mount bracket? Or need modification (like DR kit) or new bracket like Speedtech? If new bracket needed, is it included in kit?

-Expansion tank? Does it need to be relocated? If so, does it come with relocation kit?

-Does turbo inlet have connection for PCV hose? Or do I need to fab something up if I'd like to keep my stock pcv hose?

-Does turbo inlet incorporate the MAF sensor, or do I need to modify or adjust tune to run mafless?

These things are probably trivial for somebody with the appropriate fab tools, alternate transportation, and time to tinker. But I'm not currently in that situation so I'd really like to know what would be involved to plan accordingly. I've emailed him but still don't have answers to the above - probably he's really busy and I hate being a pest. I know at least one guy is running this kit on an e82, but I haven't seen any forum threads from him. I'm not on IG or FB so not sure if i'm missing out on any details over there...

I still haven't heard back from them yet. It would be nice to have a section on their page that shows what all is included with the kit. don't really feel like spending north of 6k to find out. If it is a semi complete kit that just requires a few adjustments I am really leaning towards this since I would prefer to use a BW EFR. only thing that worries me with that kit is I swear I saw somewhere that someone had problems controlling their boost with their speedtech EFR turbo. I wonder if that is why they don't offer it anymore?

I've seen posts from different sources about people having issues controlling boost with the internally gated EFR's. I'd like to understand better, because people on other platforms don't seem to have a problem with them. Yet, some people see boost creep? BW specifically designed and sized the internal gate to work properly for the application, so not sure why the internal gate would be the problem🤷‍♂️

Jeff mentioned that some people didn't initially set up the electronic wastegates correctly (I believe learning the start and stop positions), and ended up needing to redo some stuff to get it working correctly.

I suspect for those having issues it's probably some combination of wategate actuator setup and tuning issues? EFR's are very responsive, so I'd speculate it takes more work to get them dialed in just right. Seems worth it to me though.

Here are a few relevant N54/N55 kit posts. There’s not one of a fully dressed engine, but it looks like a nice kit I agree. He (4N) did install the N55 135i kit by the looks of it @wheela, could that be an option for you?

Thanks for posting these links! I have seen those. If it fits a 135 I think it will fit my e84 - that's the hope👍

@4N Motorsport - I'm trying to @ you, but the @ doesn't seem to be linking to your profile? Looks like you haven't logged on here in a while, but I was wondering if you could take some time to provide some details on your n55 EFR kit here?

People are interested!! Thanks!

@wheela have you considered using a externally gated kit. But you purchase it without turbo or wastegate. Have a quick block off made for where the wastegate would go on the manifold and just use your internally gated turbo of choice.
Not sure if downpipe fitment would remain the same but its an idea.

I have about 3 months or so until I am supposed to return state side and I'm in a big debate with myself on what to do. I really want to get the 4n ERF kit but with no info on what the kit even really consists of and not knowing any of the above information that @wheela stated earlier it would be a hard plunge. Then another route I have been looking at is the Speedtech with a Gen 2 6466, I like all the info out on the kit and knowing there shouldn't be any fitment issues. Plus, Jeff offers a military discount (which I think is pretty awesome of the guy). Then finally I have also been looking at the Pure 750, I actually went to Pure in Oceanside when they first came out with the Stage 1 and had them install it. Really cool guys that work there and have a really nice and clean shop. Ran the stage 1 for a long time finally got the stage 2 from Pure and it has been great. I installed that one myself and although it is not hard, it is terribly time consuming. I talked with them as well about the 750 and the fact that Iam currently stationed away from any close E85 at the moment and just using 92 and meth for now and they were straight up with me about it and told me I probably wouldn't see much gains compared to my current PS2. I really respect the fact that they were honest with me about my expectations as always and not just after a money grab.

What would be nice is to get a "forever" turbo installed where I don't have to take the manifold off every time I want to upgrade or replace a faulty turbo (never had a turbo fail on me yet though 🤞). At least now days it's a problem of choosing which option you wanted to go with instead of my 2014 decision between a VTT Stage 1 and Pure stage 1 :tearsofjoy:.

I have given that some thought - get a Speedtech kit sans turbo and buy the EFR I want. I ran it past Jeff, his main concern was the length of the EFR, might need to get creative to address interference with the water pump. I still haven't ruled in out, I like the idea of a nice cast manifold.

I reached out to a local fab shop about options for potentially tweaking a turbo kit, but I never heard back from them.

Yeah, I've been waiting on results of the pure 750 too, specifically with 93oct. Thanks for sharing what they told you, I'm a little bumbed they expect minimal gains over PS2 on pump. At least the spool is supposed to be quicker though.

No problem, you really can't go wrong with Pure, they are a great bunch of people at that company. Only problem with hybrids (in my opinion) is you have to have the octane to really have them show their true colors. it's crazy the difference of 18psi on 92 with meth compared to 24psi e30+meth on my PS2. Honestly, I can't imagine my current turbo spooling faster than it already does lol. Makes for some interesting first few gears! I am really curious to see what one of these much bigger turbos would do on 92+meth. it would be really nice to have a pump+meth 550 to the wheels.

What’s up guys! My name is Mike owner of 4N Motorsport. I found this thread just from Google search😂 I occasionally look for threads on our products and this just came up.

Some info on our N55 kit:

Manifold is made from the same material as our S55 kits 321 SS. This holds up better in a racing environment. All of our bottom mount kits are designed to hold up to endurance racing, touring car racing, drift, time attack basically anything. I built an M4 GT4 replica just to test and push our manifolds and heat shielding design to the limit. Although it’s an S55 engine it’s very similar to the N55. We’ve ran our GT4 EFR build at Buttonwillow with 110 ambient temps all day, track temp was almost 145 degrees mid day!!! You can’t ask for a harsher environment to stress test a turbo kit!

The EFR kit comes with a custom motor mount bracket to clear the EFR turbo, heat shielding, PNP coolant pipe, a tab to lower the water pump, turbo oil pressure fittings and line, drain line, single 3.5 DP, 3.5 standard intake. Water reservoir tank relocation to driver side is required. This kit can be configured with your factory EWG or IWG actuator.

Boost creep…..

The EFR IWG T4 housing flows incredibly well. I had a customers car here and we ran as low as 10 psi all the way to 7,000rpms with E85 ethanol. I have not seen any creep at all and I think this was just miss Information from other turbo kit companies when the EFR launched or they tried to utilize a single way pressure source type IWG actuator and had to use stiffer springs. That could induce boost creep. Turbosmart makes a dual port IWG actuator that works amazingly with our kit and you can setup wastegate at 14psi and send it at 30psi all day. For more questions feel free to message me. I am also available by phone to answer more in depth questions you guys might have on your goals and setup. Thanks!!! 👍

Hi Mike, thanks for dropping in and taking time to post! This information should be helpful for the community. Also, I think its GREAT that the manifolds are 321ss vs 304😍

Have any of your kits gone into any x-drive or auto-transmission cars yet? I know the motor mount set up is slightly different between rwd and X-drive, and I think there may also be some differences (cooling pipes/hoses maybe?) between auto and MT🤷‍♂️?

It would be awesome if you could chime in here periodically as your kit gets installed in different n54/n55 chassis configurations so we know what's confirmed👍
