And now things just got even more interesting.

That means that there is a cross over date for auto's likely. Usually they go from bolted to welded (its cheaper to weld them) rather than from welded to bolted.

Do you know exactly what vehicle that came out of and what the build date was?

At a minimum this makes me wonder if the auto guys could source a bolted front diff for them selves and then swap to the LSD carrier and then no one has to have gears made.

I dont know what exact vehicle this came out of. I wish I did. My friend bought an engine to swap into his car and it came with this attached. After the engine was delivered the seller got shady and wouldn't answer questions. It was super easy for me to acquire this bolted diff tho haha. Being the person who sent in the first diff that was welded, and now this one which is bolted, it's almost 50/50 :tearsofjoy: I wonder what's on my car currently

Hello, google just showed me this thread when I was looking for front diff info. You can ask https://www.samsonas.com/ because they have rally car which is build 4x4 using e83 transmission. I am surre they have LSD in front diff.

Is this still on going? Because I’d like to get in on this. I have a 2009 e92 335i xDrive, manual transmission, production date 10/08. If the VIN is needed, I can provide that as well.

if this does happen, do you think we can make the gear ratio closer to that of the m3? That way we can also do the m3 rear diff swap!!!! Wahooooo

No thanks, don't want to redo my rear diff too. One-offs will defeat the point of a group buy.

what’s the point of having just the front lsd? Plus then you get lsd rear, beefier rear half shafts and a beefier drive shaft. All for cheaper than a quaife or wavetrac which is just the lsd.

Pretty sure he means he already has a LSD rear diff that ISNT an M3 diff, so he would have to redo the rear to match m3 front ratio.

Ah ok. Well hopefully they will let us choose ratio. Can’t be that big of a difference in price, right?

Actually it can. Setting up a machine to produce a batch of something is one of the most time consuming parts of doing the manufacturing.

Because of this, each different ratio we ask for costs a significant amount, and the only way to mitigate this cost is to buy in volume (let the machine make a bunch once its setup) so asking for additional ratios is likely a no go I'd bet.

There is a known quaife part number, but I don't want to post it here as I find that impolite to the purpose of this thread. If you want it, either PM me or email Birds auto.

That would be QDF21N (I don't find it impolite, it's more data and there are links to other potential substitutes earlier in this thread). Birds said this is a 3.08 ratio, however, plus the sizing may or may not be correct. Would have to tear one down, measure to see if it would require a manual carrier, then swap both the front and my current rear lsd over to new diffs, which with parts and labor to make sure shim and lash is set properly would be over $4k, assuming new carriers weren't necessary as well. Gonna keep waiting on this group buy I think ;)

There already is a non-M, MFactory LSD/Rear Diff available for the 3er. The point of this group buy is to get xDrive, non-M, front LSD/ring gear units manufactured at a reasonable batch cost.

I’m in. Hopefully we can get this going. I have a 2009 335i 6MT xDrive - 10/08 prod. date.
VIN available.

Yes, I have that installed. But it's a 3.46, not a 3.08. Sorry if that was confusing. The quaife part is for a front diff.

We have no idea how many we have of each type, however. And some of the earlier signups might be hard to get info from.

I'm acquiring a front diff from another 2011 335xi AT e90. Any use for sending it in, or should I just see if it's bolted/welded? @MFactory

I think there was some confusion over whether the n55s were different (I still doubt they are) but this should put that to bed.
