@Twisted Tuning what is your words on @battlehawk reply? do we need an upgraded ring and pignon like he said ?
i hope this can handle power..

This will help cure or at minimum reduce the chance of ring and pinion wear/damage/failure.

One of the largest root causes of ring and pinion failure are the fast and repeated torque transfers of the open diff when traction is an issue. sudden catches of traction by one spinning wheel shocks 're internals. give the right scenario ad this transfer bangs back and forth as one wheel catches or loses traction opposite of the other.

It's an inherent weakness of Open diff. This LSD should help with that substantially.

Other causes of failure are bearing wear. And this should help with that also as the above can cause premature bearing wear/failure

The front lsd maker is quafie nothing special about it. I told them what I wanted and the part number of my front diff and poof I had what I needed.

So some quick background on bmw ring and pinions. Bmw use to only have 3 different ring and pinion sizes. The sizes went by the inside or out side diameter of the actual ring gear. think of this similar to rear pumpkin diff sizes. 168mm = small. 188=mediem 210/215= large. I know on my car (guessing all 335) have the 168.
From talking to master bmw diff builders the 168 can handle anywhere from 200 foot pounds to 300. Depending on your diff ratio. Manual transmission 3.08 diff ratio can handle a little more then 3.45(or whatever it is) autos diff. We are definitely pushing the limits of the front diff. More In the morning. This beer is starting to hit me

If you're talking about rear differential, they are 188 and 215. There is another one that goes in the 128 automatic I think.

Also, do you have the part number or other information about the quaife?

This is correct!! I was a little out of it when I wrote that up.
There are MANY diff ratios. But basically BMW has a small, medium and large diff sizes (for the rear). Usually for the front it is a slightly different version of the 168 and on the larger engine cars (example x5m) they use the 188 up front.

I believe the Quaife part number is 838-210. I am still going to through paperwork to confirm it. Below is a link to part just in case. I know it fit some earlier bmw front diffs too.

So basically a 128i lsd could be used in the front diff... Interesting. Is it bolted?

I personally not not speak for 128i lsd fitting in the front diff.

After doing a quick search. The 128I rear diff is a 188mm. The 335 front diff is a version of a 168 ring and pinion. A 188 is not going to fit into a 168 housing.

These are NOT my photos. But this is a 335 front diff. But you can tell. There is not a lot of room in the front diff case.

Sorry I was thinking the auto 128i had the small diff, 168mm or whatever it is.

Hey those are my photos! Glad others are using them haha. Anyways the photos are actually from the automatic and are not the 3.08 ratio. At one time I was considering making a billet front diff carrier and using a modified GM typhoon carrier with their R&P gears as well, which can handle a huge amount of power.

It would be far easier to make a billet housing that would interchange with the stock internals, or this lsd assuming it would also be interchangeable. Ideally make it with a lot more internal volume and a viewport to check fluid level.

@Twisted Tuning, have I been driving my ‘08 335xi 6AT E90 for the last 10 years with the misimpression that an LSD (front or rear) was not compatible?!? If so, what combination of rear and front would you recommend, and can you point me to an install DIY?
Thanks.

Idk if you need to send in a core for this but if you do and anyone would rather have a driveable car, i have a front diff you can buy to send in as your core. Came from a totalled e60 xdrive. Has about 80k

I saw your post about your e60. I’m sorry for your loss...
I will let you know if I need a core, but it probably won’t be anytime soon as I’m in the middle of too many other things rn.
