if they went out of business you would just replace them with the IGN-1 coils supplied by many vendors with different stickers on them, and that coil is not going anywhere, is better than the tested IGN1A for reasons v8bait mentions, and a lot better than the R35. I don't know what the dwell differences are between PR and IGN-1 coils, but the IGN-1 dwells will be well documented so you should be fine.

IGN1 dwell is around 3ms, PR dwells out longer with higher inductance to give the smaller wiring in our ignition system a break and primary is wound to give similar feedback to the dme as factory coils, nowadays with everything we know about the dme and new tuning tables it isn't really needed, but allows you to run the PR without any flash changes (not that important anymore everyone has MHD). All the mercury marine based coils from AEM, MSD, PR etc are very similar in core design and power output between inductive designs. The CDI variant from MSD are quite a bit different though so obviously don't use those.

PR wire leads would work with IGN1A on stand alone cars.

so would that be a concern, if you were to have a PR kit and decided to switch the coils out to IGN1 some years down the track?

No problems just dwell everything to 3ms or run the IGN1 a little hotter with PR dwell. Tested them with the PR they're similar output wise, dropping dwell to IGN1 level would lower PR output down some, maybe to 100mJ, not sure never tested. You'd never notice. Running the IGN1 at higher dwell would heat it up a little more and pull a few more amps but won't hurt anything. During testing I ran the PR test set at 6ms dwell for a year, which is blatantly over saturated, and experienced zero problems. Also ran them with a boost-a-spark with 19+ volts on the primary over dwelled... that did occasionally cause codes related to the boost-a-spark but no issues. In comparison factory coils lasted a week with the boost-a-spark setup. Still running those same test coils from 2015 at around 700hp fwiw, which is a tribute to mercury marines design which all of these share.

Tl;dr yeah while not exactly interchangeable it would be fine because the coil and car is pretty robust.

If you mean plug wires yes. If you mean harness wires. Not the ones we have. The IGN-1A's I have are 5 wire and use a completely different plug than the PR coils which are 3 wire. These IGN 1A's require 3 grounds for each coil, a sensor ground, a ground to the head, and and battery ground. They also call for some serious wiring gauge. Its why we were hesitant to use them. They are a hassle to make a harness for.

Yeah I meant plug wires yes. The 3 grounds are needed, cylinder head ground protects the coil, high current ground to chassis, and an isolated signal ground usually to the DME itself (any dme ground is fine). BMW uses the same grounding scheme just with the factory coils signal/signal ground is internal and the high current ground also gets routed through the dme (as a switched signal).

Finally, they bothered to release it to the public, I've been testing these for far too long. I was sick of turning away customers and steering them clear of the other kits, last thing I wanted is to replace transistors in DME's all day. The other kits are great don't get me wrong but they do not address the DME's main ignition issue and exacerbate the problem. These guys come from the Japanese car world where the manufacturers stopped using external igniters back in ’95. Smart coils are their jam and in this application it also saves your poor DME transistors from a bad time. Seeing as though R35 coils are in 1000hp+ cars, I don’t give a flying mJ what the other coils do. Just don’t bring me another DME to fix because of them. We needed a kit that didn’t have brittle 3D printed connectors with R8 coils that didn’t fit right and something that didn’t use leads like an 80’s chev, welcome to the future.
