My thoughts... this looks a lot worse than it is. The damage doesn't seem to go past the radiator and relevant support structures.

Still going to add up $$ quickly but this may be fixable.

hood, fender, bumper, radiator, fan, oil cooler, supporting bits, headlight, kidney grills, electric repair for the headlight area, air bag, ....

What do you think?

Yours? :( Could be a total depending on the year/value. Take the check and all mods, find a 335is DCT or a Z4 :D

That's totalled when you add up all parts at OEM prices with paint (unless it's really low mileage helping the value), but I agree with RSL, take the check and find a new one.

Is that an e93? If so the rear and top look good. Depending on how much the buyback is you could part it out and make money if the engine and transmission are good and the top isn't bent. Those tops aren't cheap and I'm sure there's someone out there looking for one.

What's the process for something like this if it is totaled? Do they give you a chance to buy back everything for a certain number?

Considering the value of these things these days it is well more than likely toast if considering having it fully professional repaired. You really want to look to see if the fenders pushed into the door panels at all, if those seams are still perfect that is a good thing (which it appears they could be but the pics aren't really the best either). You also will want to look at the frame rails where the front bumper meets the chassis. If you are a DIY'er you may find it is worth the buyback and piece parting it back together with junkyard/ebay finds.

This is my Son's car. He had it all paid for too and ran great on MHD stage 2

Not an E93 so no value there unfortunately. It is over a 100k miles too so no help there either.

But, the engine was well sorted and new maintenance items all around, so may bring it home and take what we want.

Injectors, new clutch and flywheel (IS upgrade version), rotors, tires, intercooler, external PCV and catch can, the usual stuff we all do. Don't think I can manage selling an engine. Leave that for the junk yard I suppose.

Sounds like you need to buy your son a hoopty. Are you the same guy from e90post asking about doing a tune on your son's car? Would be ironic for sure.

Ha. Nope. Haven't asked about tuning on his car anywhere. He bought and works on his own car.

What would you want for the motor, assuming it's not damaged at all?

Who has experienced the buyback process? Do they just look for what they expect it would go for at auction? or junkyard rate?

Yes, generally they will see what they are getting for them at auction and offer it to you for around that price. Sometimes you can haggle, sometimes you can't. It just depends.

Update:

The adjuster came out the next morning. A+ response time

Just based on what he can see (not taking anything apart for a more thorough look), he was over $11,000. This is a 2007 E92 so $11k is well over the value of the car. The good news is it was valued higher than what my son paid for it. At least it confirms we picked out a good deal!

His options:
  1. Buy it back for $2,200 and
    1. part it out
    2. or fix it with salvage/cheaper parts than a professional restoration.
  2. - Take the $ and try to find another E92 manual
    1. or part it out keeping the transmission to swap into an easier to find auto

From personal experience if you can peace it all together yourself won’t be a bad fix but take into account airbags and all parts definitely use eBay or find a parts car that is being peaced out might get a cheaper bundle price.
Bmws are meant to be clean with perfect gaping and clean lines hard to duplicate it if you try and budget build it. I bought two recked bmws and built them back it’s a pain if your into small details.
If you have to pay shop price for all the work just take the check and buy a new one 100k pretty affordable now a days just take all the upgraded parts best advice.
