Technical Odd WGDC Fluctuations, Interim 30FF/limp mode

Apologies to begin with, this is a longish-winded post:

I have a 2010 BMW E60 535i xDrive. The car just hit 82k miles. I've owned the car for about 6 months now, and only started modifying it. So far I've done a muffler delete, BMS DCI, 1-step colder plugs, Eldor coils, and a JB4 - usually have it set to Map 0 because I commute and like the way the N54 drives normally, but sometimes Map 1 for fun...beautiful days, terrorizing my neighbors, etc.

I've never had any issues with boost leaks or anything of the sort until after I installed the JB4. It's a used unit, and the old owner had it set up to run E85, but I reset all stats to default and since then it's been good. The most boost I've pushed is one time 17psi after doing an initial WOT test on Map 5 (figured it was fine because it was just once and only for a couple seconds). From there, however, I've only run Map 1 as to not damage anything. Sometimes when I run Map 1 or even Map 0 under high (or even medium, say uphill) acceleration I'll get a 30FF and a half CEL (limp mode). Like I said, most of the time I drive like a normal person and I keep it on Map 0 for comfort. So, the 30FF is odd - wasn't normal before JB4, so I figured it might be a boost leak from running at over-stock boost. I haven't done a very good inspection on all the vacuum lines or anything, but I have a VRSF charge pipe + TiAL BOV coming in next week to prevent a cracked charge pipe.

Typically, I hit boost targets just fine or am within 1-2psi. The most odd thing, however, is sometimes under mild acceleration I'll hear a sort of "pulsing" coming from something, seemingly my exhaust. Or at least from under the car - I can hear the exhaust pretty good from driving because of the lack of mufflers now. I decided to sift around the JB4 app parameters yesterday to see if I could find the culprit, and sure enough, the WGDC parameter (which I believe to be wastegate duty cycle, right?) kind of bounces back and forth, following the same "pulsing" I hear while driving. RPMs rise as they should. See the logs below and turn on the 'WGDC' and 'pedal' parameters and you can see this sort of sinewave-like behavior. I'm not sure what the normal wastegate behavior looks like, but I know it is more of a predictable function than the logs show and from what I hear.

I'm also not sure if this is what causes my 30FF code, but I don't believe this behavior was happening prior to my JB4 install. I was going to order boost solenoids and vacuum lines to replace the current ones - this kit from FCPEuro, as I believe they've likely never been done to this vehicle, but wanted to check here if the problem might be anything else. It's also annoying to randomly go into limp mode when I'm just normally driving the car as I should. Thank you for reading and for assistance!

There's some menus for JB4, I believe -> 10/11/12, that need to be tweaked in your case. New vac lines certainly won't hurt either. 30FF for pure JB4 could be a boost leak or also could be result of the piggyback not sending properly spoofed pressure readouts to the DME.

I also somewhat suspect one of your DPs may be a bit clogged.

Or you can just switch to MHD and go flash only, add catless DPs, which at this time in 2023 I strongly recommend.

I just read that on another forum actually (changing settings in JB menus), I’ll try that in an hour or so when I’m back in my car. As for MHD, do you actually recommend it that heavily? I just spent the money (~$300) for a used JB unit with the bluetooth adapter. So far I really like it because of the app and the ability to view stats on the fly. Haven’t looked into MHD too much, but I am planning on doing catless downpipes this coming winter/spring - I’m a college student so sometimes life prioritizes paying for tuition sadly…

Sell the JB4 and buy some second hand catless DPs, enjoy installing them yourself, and get MHD OTS maps and logging module for your fuel Along with the WIFI adapter and I think you'll still have some money left over for pizza and beer to eat while installing the pipes.

Dividends pay later when you already have MHD platform for custom tunes after college and more mods.

As for MHD, not going to start a this vs that but I was tuned on JB/BMS boxes with and without backend flashes for almost a decade. I'm flash only now for a few years on MHD. Choose your adventure.

On a XI 535 this is no task for the light hearted.


as shock said MHD is superior in my well educated opinion. Mhd Super license with wifi adapter, and maybe XHP to go with. It'll feel like a new car.
At the end of the day it is my daily driver, I typically keep it on stock map (Map 0) on JB4. I'm not looking for crazy power, and Map 1/2/5 give more than enough power than I need. Catless dps will not be a job that I do for myself; the shop that did my muffler delete/exhaust tips actually offered to do more exhaust work when needed and they have very fair labor rates. I'd more than likely go to them.

Don't drink the koolaid. Jb4 will be fine for what you are after.
Not sure if Scorpstan was running jb4 on his world record 1/2 mile run but even the link below is impressive.



The number of MHD users now, most likely far outweigh JB4 users.
Jb4 was around way before MHD even existed but has come a long way since.
Anyway, JB4 cars CAN put it down.

Yes it is.
Not sure if he is still on JB4 but at the time of his WR run.....he was in fact JB4 equipped.

lol throw back to jb3 vs procede!! But at least with JB4 and MHD they can be happy together! I remember before I bench unlocked my DME I was about to give up on my car. the JB4 made it fast but it didn't run how I wanted it to at all. Once they came out with the BEF I couldn't believe the difference. Been happy ever since.

JB4 works but you need a back end flash to get the most out of it. Most use MHD to load that flash afaik. I would just run MHD, at this point I am not aware of any features JB4 has the MHD does not. I could be wrong as I never ran a JB4 and have not kept up with the product much in the last 3+ year. I have always been flash tuned. Cobb to MHD in my case. If you like the JB4, keep it but I would sell and just run MHD as suggested above by one of my associates.
