I saw a vendor selling a kit to repair the injector bores. The kit is outrageously overpriced at $499 would love to put together a parts list and see also what you gents think of the kit?

That is HIGHLY overpriced.
Inserts , drill, tap and new seals.
I could see if they included install, but just those parts 😅😅😅😅

Not much to it. Need to measure the size of insert. Once you have that, you figure out drill and tap size. We run steel inserts in aluminum blocks all day long.

What was that inexpensive creative way to fix the injector bore issue I read about the other day on this forum?

Use the cap that came with injector when you buy new ?

Yes! That was it. I thought that was a neat solution, assuming it actually works.

Obviously fixing it the right way is ideal aka drilling, tapping, repair sleeve etc. like in the 1st post.

Still running my cap fix for about 15k miles now with upgraded hybrids. Now I wont lie, cylinder 1 (cap fix) does have more timing corrections than the rest of the motor, but I've never had a problem with it at 32 psi

Original 17t's before everyone jumped in the band wagon lol!

I'm coming up on 30k miles on them now. Though mind you, I would rarely ever target that much boost, and I normally run 23psi with 93 and 28-30psi with e85.

Yep. My thought process back then was that if they blew early on, I'd go single turbo

I mean it is expensive, however its the only fix of its kind. Whats the other option, teflon tape, new head? To my knowledge that kit is custom, unless you buy it and reverse engineer it. . .
Hello.

I own PPI. This is my kit. It’s not expensive. It’s appropriately priced for the time we spent last year going back and forth to R&D this insert. Finding the exact perfect tolerance to not just make a good seal but improve the seal over stock. Then trying different types of materials that seal best against the teflon seal. Then finding the exact perfect spot to stop the tap at so the fitting can’t ever go to far into the combustion chamber. Then testing on cars for a few thousand miles to make sure there are zero issues. This alone was tens of thousands of dollars out of our pocket over the year. You have to think of the heads we wasted drilling and tapping, cost of cad software, hundreds of design hours with revisions, machine one off fittings that don’t work and we have to go back and try again. What about a engine we test a prototype on that doesn’t work. Now it’s junk, a lot of money goes into designing this. Yes a little piece of metal is cheap. The r&d and design is what you are paying for.

I am the only one who thought of this idea and spent the time, money, and resources to make it and make it perfect to save people from replacing heads and engines. I did this because I’ve seen everyone complain for years ask why no one has come up with a fix for this yet. Replacing engines and heads are not cheap. Let’s say you do a engine. Well that’s a couple grand with fluids. Plus labor if you pay a shop. And you could still end up with the same issue. Plus week or two down time.

How about a head swap. Well to do it right you need to machine the head flat, gasket set, lots of time, timing tools etc. again couple grand after fluids and all. Plus labor if a shop does it and again may still have the same issue.

My fix for $500 is way cheaper then any alternative you have ever had on this platform to fix this issue correctly. Plus no down time. You turned a two week repair at $2000+ into a $500 1 hour job! I spent a lot of time last year developing and testing this.

Of course I knew after all said and done. Someone would buy one and try to reverse engineer it as that would be easy. And you just saved tens of thousands in R&D. I’m not stupid. I knew that would cross someone’s mind.

That is why I made sure our attorney filed all the patent paperwork before I released it. So if anyone reversed engineered it, I could shut them down and go after them for stealing my patent and idea plus loss of profits.

Not to be that guy. But it’s not right someone spends thousands on r&d for someone just to steal their idea. That’s why we patent products. Its one thing to do that if it’s a fix that’s been around 20 years and several companies have it in different versions and you want to make your own and sell it. Go for it. People do that every day. Sony isn’t the only tv lol. DAW isn’t the only upgraded turbo out there. It’s another thing if someone never thought about this and spent the time and money to R&D an idea like we did.

That’s why I made sure from day 1 it had the patent paperwork filed before I released this.

Guys honestly, you spend $500 on a fuel pump upgrade you could piece together for $200. You spend $500 on PR coils, $1000 on a aluminum valve cover, $2000 on turbos, but yet complain about these stupid worn injector bores and misfires you can’t get rid of and someone finally makes a fix for it and your go to is $500 is to expensive let’s reverse engineer this for less! Really?

You are not paying $500 for the fittings. You are paying $500 for the fittings engineered to fix this issue that we spent a year and thousands of dollars developing, our idea and time.

But if someone wants to try to reverse engineer this for less. Be my guest. We have our bases covered legally. Just a Fair warning.

With that said. I’m not trying to be threatening or that guy but want it to be well known we WILL protect our work and assets by all legal means necessary. All T’s crossed and all it’s dotted.

It’s a great product, a great fix, and we have yet to see it not fix misfires caused by loose injectors.

The cap cut off trick does work. Kinda. Till one day you are doing a pull and it shoots the injector out and engine throws a rod. Seen that one personally. Which is what finally made me spend the time to make this kit. I wanted to make it and sell for $100. But that just didn’t happen. The time and money invested in R&D was to much and we have to recoup that. Maybe in a year or two we will drop the price after we recoup the investment. But not until then.

Your cap trick, Teflon tape, etc are bandaids. Guys you spend thousands on these builds. Our kit fixes the problem. It’s clean and easy to do. Not bandaid on the symptoms like your other fixes. Fix it and fix it right the first time. Also in our testing we found the sweet spot in tolerance where it seals tight and causing no timing corrections. That took a lot of R&D guys. That’s what you are paying for!

Again not trying to be that guy. Just want it well known we spent a lot of time getting this right and won’t be ripped off by anyone.

Thanks to all our customers and beta testers on this for your support.

I had the injector port ovalling issue and had to go through the hassle of a head replacement. Total costs were about £1500 including labour and it was a real pain just sorting the logistics of it. Finding a good condition used head is really difficult.

I was 6 months too early for this fix but it's nice to know that it's out there in case it happens again. I don't think it's overpriced at all and probably niche enough that anyone wanting to copy it will struggle to turn a profit.

I'm guessing your site is https://ppifpr.com. Have you considered doing a DCT pan replacement at a similar price point to those 6AT ones?

They will have trouble. When I went into this I thought I could sell it for $100-$200 and make a profit. Just not happening. Then by the time you add up all you have invested. Well guess what. You are at $500. We are always looking for ways to improve costs. We have looked at big bulk orders and sourcing parts from China. But then we sacrifice quality control and sea freight is crazy right now. We could get a 40 ft container delivered to our port for $3500 a year ago. Now it’s $23,000. Everything is up. If and when the inflation goes away. Our prices will drop. This kit will drop in price. But until then. It’s $500. Which at the end of the day is still well priced considering the alternative.

As far as the pans go. Not at this time. Burger Motorsports sells a billet dct pan. Cast would be way cheaper. Maybe we will look into it in the future. But to be honest. With the attitude people have on the N54 platform we are really considering not putting anymore effort into the N54 and stick with b58 development.

The N54 crowd is filled with haters and people like above. Like who thinks it’s ok to rip off someone else’s r&d and just copy a product for cheaper. It would be one thing if someone else made a N54 injector repair sleeve. No one makes them for any engine. We now have them for the N54. And also a separate n20/n55/b58 kit coming soon. We have already started to see all of those engines have the same ovaling issues. We had a shop the other day buy a n20 kit and do it vs charging the customer for a new head.

At the end of the day we spent this money to help the platform. Not to get ripped off and deal with trolls. Unfortunately that’s what this platform has turned into. But we are here to help and advice is always free. Message us on our Facebook page. We will gladly give advice and help troubleshoot N54 issues free of charge.

Thanks everyone

Well hi there PPI Owner. . . Glad you chimed in and quoted my text. . . No where did I say I was going to reverse engineer it and resell it. I support small business's as well as those who take the time to invest and make an item that is not offered that works. Was simply a statement for those who are true DIY'rs out there who want to make their own kit based off your idea. . . Not illegal, unless they copy it and sell it. But hey, im not the copyright infringement police :/

But actually it is illegal. Even to make and use for your own personal use and never sell. That’s the whole point of a patent.

That is entirely the point of my response above.

Just making it. Using it, or (not and) selling it or offering to sell, or even make and give away for free to a friend. Is illegal. It’s protected under

35 U.S. Code § 271

So why you may feel you have the right to take my idea that I worked hard to design and make and use it for your self or share for free with friends… you don’t.

I support diy. We gladly offer free advice and help everyday for no charge at all to anyone who messages us. Seriously message us on Facebook if you have a bmw issue you can’t figure out. We will guide you through a diy fix. Advice is always free with us.

But making a diy copy of a patented product is illegal. Doesn’t matter if you sell it or not.

We don’t pay our attorney for nothing. We made sure when we made the investment to test this that the patent was made correctly so that no one can use this and steal our idea and us not recoup our investment.

If you need a kit. I’m happy to help you. I’ll gladly sell you one. If you own a shop and have a business license and want to stock them we offer discounts on bulk orders and to resellers.
