Just an FYI, I have been running the ET3designs EKPM3 for 3 months or so with no issues with my PR stage 2.5. We shall see how it goes.
Good to know..will be fitting mine this winter with my new upgraded LPFP..đź‘Ś

Oh this is "cool", and the first I have heard of this. Any chance you grabbed a pic of the inside of the module? I am curious if they changed the entire PCB or just replaced some SMD components.

It’s the same board, the main chip, the PWM driver and logic has been replaced by its later, more capable, pin compatible cousin..maybe revisions to incoming power stabilising circuit chip…old main chip shown for reference also👌

$315 is a lot for a component or two soldered on imo. Granted it is a bit under half the price of a BMP4 but the BMP can control 2 pumps.

I like how you can't read the new chip he installed ;)

With some sleuthing I am sure someone can find out exactly what chip he used. Probably costs a couple bucks and 2 minutes with an iron.

Is this really needed if you use a 535 pump + actively cool the EKP + a few heat sinks? If you need a 2nd pump use BMP4 or a relay + harness.

Yeah my guess is that it doesn't take much to do what he did, he also sells two versions. But getting a BMP4 is impossible and I needed something.

If you look in the OEM semiconductor catalogue you can see that the original IC was discontinued some time ago and is typical they offer a faster / better version..usually to ease the pain of their customers they try and make it pin compatible to save reworking the board…I can give you the new IC reference if you are interested…usually the problem with these types of chips is that minimum numbers are circa 1,000….

Sure why not!

I wonder if I can order a lower number through my company...for 'testing/engineering' purposes.

I have spare EKPs but I have no desire to make a competitive product. But if I can mod a few and send them out and they work for people, free mod for the community. Granted they would need a supply of those chips.

Going back to my question is there any need $315 modified EKP? If one uses a EKP + the $15 cooling mods(thermal pad, heat sink, fan) + a 535 walbro doesn't that work to fix the EKP overheating issues? After that you use a relay + harness for your 2nd pump($75 bucks from PR) or buy a BMP4.

I had a walbro 450 and my stock EKP from 2007 and never once had an issue.

Here you go…

You may have to do some other minor discrete logic and firmware changes…

I’m a hobbyist level electronics guy and spent several years in the semiconductor and fab business but figured I could do more productive things with my time …

Enjoy đź‘Ś

I’ve considered the passive/active cooling solution but just not sure if it’s needed for my current setup. I run a 535 with the newest version ekpm3 that I purchased from FCP for about 375. My plan was to just warranty the unit if I have issues.

Based on the experience of others, is there any reason to consider a cooling path for running a 535 single setup. No issues so far but only been a few thousand miles.

New Infineon half bridge IC ... I tried to do a swap and ruined one EKP. I didn't have the chops to pull off the swap with my hot air setup. Interestingly enough, didn't have a local buddy with enough chops either.

Ordered et3 stg 2 epk to go along with my PR 2.5 v2 lpfp that I just ordered. Was very expensive before duties but after amazons duties and taxes..... ooOOHHH WHEEEEeee $672 Canadian Dollhairs for it! For what I believe to be a non genuine bmw "ebay" ekpm3 with just the output driver swapped to the newer infineon BTN8982. I'm interested to how he added in the terminal block to the actual ekp for the upgraded wires. Expensive for what it is considering a new ekpm3 here at the dealer is only $570 CAD. I do not have the skill to do these modifications myself so Bill DiPoala get my money this time, ill be sure to add more photos once it arrives.

Yeah that price is nuts. Top-side cooling is useless since the heat is on the bottom. I think we've done enough research here to know that 3 things are in play - 1) a half bridge, for which there is a far more efficient upgrade, that generates the heat, 2) the transfer heat pad between the IC and aluminum plate can be upgraded to a more efficient one, 3) further heat dissipation of the aluminum mounting plate by how it is mounted or a heat sink.

Someone with good electronics experience could offer a $150 service so take EKP's, swap the IC and swap the heat transfer pad, it would see. $420 for something for which cores cost $50 all day long, installs a fan that removes heat from the wrong side, and a heat sink that is also on the wrong side of the half-bridge seems like a complete miss.

And it should not be needed with the 525 pump. And you can buy $50 replacements on eBay if you eventually fry an EKP. Not sure I get this product.

Yeah I run the PR stage 2.5 now and my $45.00 new Ebay unit only lasted a year so I went with the ET3designs. Whether it is an upgrade or not i don't know, my original EKP made it past 110,000 miles with the PR stage 2 for a couple of years.

Here's a pic from ET3 on their EKP3M replacement showing FLIR images compared to stock part..interesting that some other parts that run hot on the stock part are much cooler on the ET3 version..?

I got the stg 2.5 lpfp with walbro 535. I've read the 525 is harder on ekp and that the 535 draws slightly less amps than 525 pump.
Seems like there are several players / options on this thread?

They're the same ekps just different amazon vendors I believe. Et3 ekp is the only one that's been physically upgraded. Now how much longer will et3 last compared to the others idk. But For the price of et3 stg 2 you could buy minimum 7 if not 8 $50 eBay ekps, Which seems to last for many people with upgraded pumps about a year.
