At Precision Raceworks we believe work should be fun so we said what is something fun we can do for 2018 that would be helpful to the E9X community?

A LIVE BUILD EVENT!

The next question was how big do we go? I mean it would be fun to try for the 1k mark… But that only helps the 1% that will spend the money to hit the 1k mark and promotes our name. That’s when we said let’s build what we consider to be the new standard it was 450-500whp on stock twins but now we feel it is more the 600-700whp on hybrids or single turbo setups. So that’s what we have set out to do a daily reliable 600-700whp car, something that is fun on the weekends but still enjoyable for the daily commute in traffic. We will post updates to this thread with photos and technical data as parts arrive and progress is made leading up to the live even which will be streamed over the internet for all to see.

March 10th 2018

That took us to Step 1 which was select a car.
· The car had to be 100% stock
· Roughly 100k on the clock to match most cars people have
· Good condition (cause who wants to build a ugly fast car)
· Automatic Transmission (most 335i’s on the market are Auto Trans)

Note: Automatic transmission was selected as it best represents majority of cars on market and this build is aimed to focus on what is most common and available on the market.

So we started looking at the dealer auctions until we found just the right car.
The clean 2010 M-Sport with 107k on the clock in the photo below is what we found.

IMG_4848.JPG

Step 2 was to look the car over for maintenance issues that should be addressed. We found exactly what should be expected on a car with 100k on the clock. We will be performing the maintenance on the car in the weeks leading up to the event posting photos and other useful information as all maintenance should always be taken care of before trying to build for higher horsepower.
· Leaking oil pan gasket
· Cracked/Leaking Valve Cover
· Old index 9 leaking fuel injectors (codes thrown 29e0 & 29e1)
· Leaking oil housing gasket
· Original belt on the car
· Original transmission filter and fluid (assumed)

So what is needed for a reliable 600-700whp car?
Now that we have a car in hand, and looked it over for issues that will be addressed before modifications it is time to make the build list. To do this we decided to buy our parts based on 2 requirements 1st being quality and 2nd being price. There is a lot of “junk” in this market and some is marketed very well! But there are also some outstanding products that can’t be beat even by similar products that cost twice as much. So we made sure to steer clear of the well marketed garbage but also didn’t want to spend money just for the sake of spending money. In other words we shopped like we are any other customer looking to spend our own money but wanted to make sure we weren’t cutting corners in the process.
· Hybrid Turbos or Single Turbo
· Downpipe(s)
· Exhaust (Optional)
· Inlets
· Outlets
· Charge Pipe
· Blow off Valve
· Intercooler
· Port Injection or shotgun setup
· Port Injection or shotgun Controller
· Upgraded Ignition System
· Upgraded fuel lines (AN6 or better)
· Stage 3 fuel pump
· Fuel Pressure Regulator / Return setup (Not required for 700whp but stable fuel is important)
· LSD to get the power to the wheels
· Differential Lockdown Kit (Wheel hop kills axels, we need to stop or minimize it)
· Sticky tires to put the power to the ground
· Transmission Tune
· Engine Tune

Step 3 is defining requirements of each component listed above we need for this build. We won’t get into all of the specs for each product just what the criteria for each were we looked for in a product to choose.

Turbo(s)
· Good fitment (no modification needed, no rubbing/rattling)
· Aftermarket Manifold (higher flow / less restriction)
· Support 20% minimum higher hp than goal (Longer life than pushing to limits)
· Robust High flow Turbine design for performance and reliability
· Quick spool time (this isn’t a hp queen it’s a daily and should be fun and responsive)
· 2” Large turbo inlet for high flow (Factory size is 1.75” and is restrictive for larger turbos)
Downpipe(s)
· Good fitment (no modification needed, no rubbing/rattling)
· Ceramic coated (holding heat in reduces thermal cycling, and helps spool faster)
· 3” or larger ID (High flow to allow minimum back pressure)
Exhaust (Optional)
· Good fitment (no modification needed, no rubbing/rattling)
· Thick gauge (so it doesn’t sound like a bumble bee)
· Stainless (so it doesn’t rust)
· 3” ID or larger (to allow minimal backpressure)
Inlets
· Good fitment (no modification needed, no rubbing/rattling)
· High flow (largest ID possible)
· 1 Piece Design (Less Turbulence)
· Strong (Won’t collapse under vacuum)
· Correct size for Turbo Flange
Outlets
· Good fitment (no modification needed, no rubbing/rattling)
· Hard pipe (Silicone is prone to failure due to temps exiting turbo and pressure)
Charge Pipe
· Good fitment (no modification needed, no rubbing/rattling)
· Can clear coolant tank on drivers side (Tank will be relocated for inlets)
· Must have flange for Tial BOV
Blow Off Valve
· Good fitment (no modification needed, no rubbing/rattling)
· Fast action
· Reliable
Intercooler
· Good fitment (no modification needed, no rubbing/rattling)
· Minimal Pressure Drop (Well-designed tanks for flow)

Port Injection
· Good fitment (no modification needed, no rubbing/rattling)
· Minimum AN6 fuel rail (Even fuel dispersion to all injectors)
· Even spray across all 6 cylinders (Must not spray any cylinders differently)
· Genuine injectors (Can’t be remanufactured, Rebranded, Off brand, Knock off, etc)
· Flow matched injectors (Must maintain 2% or better Static and Dynamic Flows)
· E85 protection for fuel rail (Raw aluminum will oxidize with E85 and clog injectors)
· E85 compliant injectors (Flex Fuel compliant injectors needed)
Port Injection Controller
· Capable of controlling 6 additional fuel injectors
· US Car Style Connectors for fuel injectors
· Compatible with flash only tune
Upgraded Ignition
· Capable of high output (stock coils can’t properly ignite fuel at these levels)
· Capable of functioning with no lift shift (we are not installing at this time but might in future)
· Maintain failure detection by DME (It is nice to keep all error codes functional for trouble shooting)
· Robust / Reliable (Must not be prone to failure like the factory coils)
Upgraded Fuel Lines
· AN6 or better (To provide stable sufficient fuel to engine bay)
· E85 Compliant (E85 is used in most high hp turbo builds due to octane levels)
· Direct Fitment (no modification needed)

Subscribed. Love the project and will be following closely. Just one question. How do you plan on dealing with the auto trans at that power level?

We will limit torque and make sure the torque curve is very smooth, the rest of the car would have no issues doing 700whp but our tuning will focus strongly on torque and keeping things happy. Where ever the horsepower numbers end up is where they will end up. But this is a very good point and the transmission will be the single limiting factor from this build making much higher numbers!

With the motor and everything running and assuming its a clean title and M-sport I would guess more like 6-8K. if its salvage title then I could see 5K

This will be interesting to watch! It seems as though you already have most of your choices already made on parts- are there still decisions to be made regarding items? I have my list of what to expect:

· Hybrid Turbos or Single Turbo - MMP with Cast manifolds
· Downpipe(s) - basically a commodity now, but VRSF offers theirs coated
· Exhaust (Optional) - at this power level, why. But I'd go with the VRSF 3.5
· Inlets - PR relocated - why use another vendor's item
· Outlets - PSP aluminum - unless another vendor offers them, that's the only possibility
· Charge Pipe - MMP offers one now, so...
· Blow off Valve - I believe in fake Tials, no need for $300 part here
· Intercooler - lots of choices here, ADE, PSP, VRSF...I think it is a tossup between VRSF Race and PSP, but since using PSP outlets - PSP
· Port Injection or shotgun setup - I would REALLY like to see a shotgunused, but since PR sells PI, it seems unlikely - Hey PR, you should do both - use the PI, get your tune dialed in, then remove it and install the shotgun. Direct comparison would be great!
· Port Injection or shotgun Controller - AIC of course, but if using the shotgun, is double barrel required with an Emix at this power level? Full E85, I guess so
· Upgraded Ignition System - PR of course - no one else offers upgraded coils ;)
· Upgraded fuel lines (AN6 or better)- PR
· Stage 3 fuel pump - PR - love my Stage 2 (it's modular! and I agree on keeping the stock filter)
· Fuel Pressure Regulator / Return setup (Not required for 700whp but stable fuel is important) - PR
· LSD to get the power to the wheels - MFactory seems to be defacto go-to, nut I'd like to see a quaife (or just get an ADE 8.8 and be done)
· Differential Lockdown Kit (Wheel hop kills axels, we need to stop or minimize it) - too many choices here to even make a guess, its some welded metal...I like my faux DEFIV though
· Sticky tires to put the power to the ground - Not a Drag radial but universally loved for traction and hated for noise - 595RS-RR
· Transmission Tune - XHP? I have a 6MT so I don't follow auto stuff much
· Engine Tune - BBApp2.0..j/k MHD
