Has anyone successfully set up an N54 to run on port injection only? Not exactly sure what the pros/cons of such a set up would be but was curious if it’s possible or has been done.

There was someone with a n54 swapped e36 that did this, ran port and meth. You can try to pick his brain but his English isn't that great.

Nope, because this would be a terrible mod. It would be better to switch to a different engine(head) or completely different platform.

DI is a way better system then port. I dont see the reason to go a step backward. DI gives way better fuel/mixture control which helps with torque and turbo spool. But then yes, the n54 di system has its limitations for now. I think the real solution is to have an upgraded hpfp(s) that can support a lot more fuel/power. I hope and believe its jist a matter of time for that product to come out.
I personally think there got to be a way to get the s55 duel pump set up to work with n54.

Most people chasing big numbers use PI as supplemental fueling anyway. If i was in that position... wouldn’t be a question I wouldn’t waste my time or money and just go straight PI. The options from that point are only limited by your imagination.

Now next question. Would this be possible with the stock ECU?

On paper it seems it’d be as simple as bolting up a PI system with enough fuel pump and injector flow to compensate for lack of DI and then tune it accordingly. Nothing is ever that simple on an N54 though

Yes, it's called N52 with turbo
You are better using a S54 block if going with that route.

Anyway, I remember seeing a post of someone removing the injectors and then weld off the holes on the head a while back. Cant seem to find it now though. But I believe the owner is either running a synevcs or motec ECU. Don't think the stock DME can properly handle such mods.

There are a lot of cool stuff that doesn't make it on to the forums sadly. Especially those Euro guys with language barriers.

It would be incredibly stupid to delete the DI system. DI is more efficient and raises your knock threshold esp when you mix in e85 into equation. If you want to make 800whp on DI alone using e85 just get Tony's double shotgun kit. If you want to make 1000whp run c16 instead.

The only benefit would be if you replaced the head with the n52 head. The n54 had pretty significant valve size limitations sure to DI. But you'd lose the vanos system, I think the n52 can only change intake timing? In any case it would be hard to make it worth while unless you were really pushing huge power, like 1000+ and desperately needed the head flow from larger ports and valves.

Lets keep this discussion to the topic at hand. People have been saying that DI is superior for ten years and they have also been saying an upgraded pump is coming from CPE for just as long. People used to rip me for suggesting TBI and supplemental PI and look at the progression we made in various other areas of the platform because of it.

Lets see where this subject goes.

So do we need a boostbox for port injectors?

Has anyone swapped from those heavy double overhead cams and tons of valves to a pushrod setup? Less valves, less rotating mass, it's so much better. Send it.

Talk all you want. Most if not all the high horsepower cars have supplemental PI because of the admittedly (only) current limits of the DI system. Double barrel is in its infancy - It may well be the panacea that were all hoping for. Until then, for outright power nobody does it without PI.

It wont spool, it wont have as good tunability or streetability. Who builds a race car for that though so who cares? If you were worried about all that you probably wouldn’t be strapping a massive single on the car I wouldn’t think. That’s all im sayin...

This conversation is the exact same one had by hot roders and tuners all over back in the early 1990’s. This stupid fuel injection. Rip it off and put on a carburetor.

That’s true but injection wasn’t “limiting things” - It was people being intimidated by the tech. That isnt the case here. The tech is limited on this platform and therefore limits the results.
Like for like other platforms are making bigger power with DI than we are because of the limitations. Outright power im saying.
