Got it. I remember now. Is the Eldor B58 coil boot different from the OE? I would order the actual coil pack from FCPeuro for their return policy.

So reviewing/reading the thread we use the:
- upper half stock eldor boot internals with resistor
- lower half of the aftermarket spring
- insert to aftermarket boot.

How far up from the bottom of the SPP223E spring did you cut? Recommended tools?

For the bolt/nut mounts do you have the thread pitch/diameter and length which worked for you and your stock N54 valve cover?

I have the PR plug and play harness on hand, did you use that or did you use a different connector to adapt the Eldor B58 coil to the N54 harness?

Easy, just line it up the spring next to the outside of the boot and you'll know where to cut.

You gotta get the correct connector to plug into the B58 coil, the PR connectors will connect to the harness but not the coil.

I had some b58 coil connector pigtails made with Orange/Brown/White for the N54. I think the N55 has a red wire instead of orange.

The adapter plugs from the vendors are custom because there doesn't to seem to be anything off the shelf that works. I tried a few different ones from other applications but they are not the same. They are nice but not really necessary.

I think cutting and splicing in new connectors makes the most sense for DIY types. If there is ever a desire to go back to stock coils then used engine harnesses are easy to find. A crimp or solder splice is just as good as having an extra connector (actually better electrically).

I should also have prototype N55 mounting plates ready soon. :)

i think like the stock position will be better

There aren't a lot of positions that both clear the early N55 coil housing that don't interfere with the original tabs, fuel lines, or hit hit the housing or valve cover. Cutting off the tabs would give more options but that doesn't seem like the best option.

I have added a second mounting position. It might have to space the coil up just slightly to clear the housing on one side. So for each pair there are will be two position options for each coil.

Very original, innovative and impressive mountain solution!
This was very original, innovative and impressive mountain solution! I went ahead and pre-ordered a kit from Nexys Motorsports as the N55 kits recently became available and I wasn't feeling like spending the time and effort whan I could be getting my car tuned with those coils, I still wish you all sucess and good luck with your DIY solutions.

For those who may be interested, I was playing around (in my head) with a design for mounting the coils on the N55 , as shown in the attached pic. below I was thinking of a "different" design utalizing a pair of rings joined by a flat bar, sorta like a pair of spectacles. I intended to use something like schedule 40 aluminum pipe cut to height (height determined by height you would want the coil to sit at) then have a machinest mill the I.D. to fit exactly around the original "coil bucket" hole and the O.D. to fit within the space. Once this is done both rings would then be attached to a flat bar by welding and bolted down using the injector plate hold down bolt. To attach the coil to the assembly I was then going to be using a threaded bung which would be welded to the outside of each ring to allow the coils to be securely bolted in place.

Hi,
I'm a little unsure about the wire connections. Terminal 2 is clear that it is a ground wire, but how about terminals 1 and 3? Is the orange wire connected to terminal one of the ignition coil (B58) and the white to terminal three?

The orange wire is #1, white is #3 for the B58 connector. BMW seems pretty consistent with the white wire with tracer and the brown wire but other cars may have Red or Green in place of the orange (red on the N55 cars, Red/Green on the B58, Green on my e70 X5).

I have pigtails available with orange/brown/white already crimped into the B58 connector if you are interested, they are not an easy crimp. They can be crimped directly, I did do it on my personal car but it took more work than splicing in pigtails. I also soldered mine after the crimp because it is hard to make a really good crimp with a hand crimper on this connector. That is why I had the pigtails made.

The coil back won't clear the insert in that position unless you space it upward a bit.

I have prototype plates in hand that avoid that issue and plan to make more if there is demand.

Thanks Rich. I got the matter resolved earlier. I installed a modified large washer as a coil rack. My B58 ignition coils work well. A few pictures of the installation. I cut the shapes out of the valve cover. I made M6 threads into the hole in the valve cover. The washer also has an M6 thread.

That certainly is a budget solution. You guys might be bigger cheapskates than the Dodge Neon crowd! :)
