What turbos would you choose for the most reliable and best power?

N54 e90 single turbo
So I took a chance and installed tomioka racing 15t turbos just to see if they were any good. I put 7k miles on them at 24psi and they made really good power. 21 psi showed 525whp. Anyways while doing some half mile practice pulls at 160mph i blew the turbine shaft I'm guessing. Tons of smoke and no boost. Afr on bank 2 is pig rich from being oil soaked I'm guessing.
Anyhow now I'm in the market for some real turbos. I've narrowed it down to RB twins or mmp stage 3's. I have looked and really cant find much on the reliability of either and what would be best for around 650whp. That being said if anyone has any experience with any please chime in. I'm no opposed to single turbo, I just like the sleeper look of stock twins.
Also I'm a tech at a bmw dealership so doing a turbo swap isnt the end of the world and I have access to all the special tools. I just want something that I dont have to mess with ever 10k miles.

Yeah I kinda expected it, as I have seen many failures with vc and other ebay turbos. I think the biggest problem is them not being properly balanced. I dont see the game finishers on their website, do I need to email them directly?

Unless you want to be changing them again in 7k miles donā€™t go MMP. I think single is by far the most reliable if you install/build it right, but Iā€™m sure the RBā€™s are reliable too

Take a look at our GC's, which will make 650 whp reliably, great match for them actually. These are the same turbos Terry from BMS made 760ish whp with, can't remember the exact number off hand, 765 I thought. GC lites will make the power but I tend to shy people away from pushing that hard if you're planning on that much power out the gate (hint: power desires don't normally decrease! :) ). You won't find any reliability info on the RB GF's yet simply because they haven't been out very long. I'm not sure you'll find info on the MMP's anymore as I didn't think anyone still ran them. Is MMP still in business? We heard rumors to the contrary but you can never tell what's legit vs. not.

Twins are, in our opinion, much more fun to drive (if designed properly). Time-to-torque, or lag, is normally significantly less than an equally power matched top end single. Remember, dyno's do not show lag, they show spool. This increased responsiveness is normally highly sought after, although if you're just doing 1/2 mile events it's less important (once spooled up).

I agree with this, and just want to add that the main argument for singles in my book is actually the sound. You don't see that on the dynos either. Power will never be enough forever anyway.

Also it is worth mentioning that some people actually like the 'excitement' of waiting for a larger single's hammer to drop. Like when you see lightning and wait for the thunder... twins aren't like that, and they arent like NA either.

What is the more important feature is really only up to each individual to find out for themselves. I honestly believe most of us can and will enjoy both, albeit for different reasons.

I would say give hydra a shot I been having great results and i have about 7k miles right now but they are a oem design just from diff car so should be very reliable . Or you cant go wrong with rb,pure or vtt. Rb gf are the only other true td04 besides hydras afaik

DAW stage 4 is a true td04 as well

RB's website is really out of date. I don't know why he doesn't bother updating it. He would get more sales. Email him: Rob Beck [email protected] While there is no failure data RB and Pure seem to have the least failures you read/hear about and the GameFinishers really look nice an an improvement from what we have seen in cast China turbos vs. say ZAGE. If I was going twins the RB GFs would be my choice today. For a Single I would still pick the ACF top mount. It's the best top mount designed for the n54 hands down, sorry doc race.

In terms of reliability a single is inherently 2x as reliable(if not more), but you pay for it. You could swap your top mount turbo and do a road course in the morning and then a 1/2 mile in the afternoon if you so desired. 30m worth of work including flashing time. Now unlikely anyone is going to do this on one day but you have the flexibility to do so. If you plans for the car change and you decide to make it a 1/2 mile, drag, or autoX, track only car etc. or you move to an area where you can access E85 easily you may want to swap out your turbo to fit your needs.

Most of the country does not have E85 access. Because of this twins(unless you go custom garrets for instance) are going to be octane limited more than most single turbos. What I mean here is if you only have 93 and don't want to mess around with meth(you should everyone should, it tastes good) a single turbo is going to give you more head room and allow you to hit a higher HP number than the twins will. You will never get a compressor map or know how much your twins flow in lb/min two very common ways to determine the right turbo for your application.

Having a ton of power down low on twins is great. Unless your motor is built you will want your tuner to likely take out some of that low end tq so you don't bend rods. People have bent rods on stock turbos. Another 200 ft lbs at 3k will not do them or you any favors. Single can make decent low end tq, not as much as twins but still decent. Oh and a single turbo sounds 100x better.

Time-to-torque, or lag, is normally significantly less than an equally power matched top end single.

What single turbos would you consider equal to GCs in output?

Perhaps a better question would be what would you guesstimate the GCs lb/min is?

Ha. So true. Back in the 90s with my MR2 turbo. Loved it. Hit the hammer..... wait....wait, boom!

Our GC were the first all TD04 units on the market, and still are all TD04. TD04 refers to the family of wheels, GC uses TD04 Turbine, compressor, and TD04 bearing housing.

Hydra rates his turbos in lbs of flow .

He does but it is a guesstimate as far as I am concerned unless he can explain how he came to those numbers. IIRC you need a compressor map to do it correctly/accurately.

They cant be
You must be going off some serious technicality as I would really consider your turbos hybrids considering they have pretty stock volute.
Anyone that has sourced outlets for a td04 turbo can confirm this.
