Solid engine mount with rubber spacer?

So I might have a failed 034 mount. Bits and piece of turbo system are knocking and have been damaged on steering shaft (rhd) / shock tower.

Yet to recover and inspect them closely but nothing obvious from underneath or that I can feel – hence I posted a question in another thread (VTT product thread) if anyone knows the measurement the rubber should protrude when brand new.

Plan A at the moment is to re-install oem mounts with the VTT inserts which I’ve ordered.
Knowing now the damage and headaches I can get into from a failed motor mount and the tight tolerances I have, I’m not very keen to experience again.

Can anyone with installed inserts explain if the insert itself acts like a fail-safe for vertical height movement, where some part of the mount on the engine side actually stops out on the insert prevent further downward movement? I guess this will become clear when I pull it all out and take a closer look.

Alternatively thinking out of the box, wondering if anyone has taken a solid engine mount and used a 5 or 10mm suitably spec’d reinforced rubber matt section as an interface to just take the edge off the 100% solid mount? Good, bad, stupid idea?

I don't see how the VTT insert would have any effect on vertical loading and or the MM compressing over time. 034 MM are junk. Mine failed in like 3 weeks. Complete trash.

I have these and I really like them: https://revshift.com/products/polyurethane-motor-mounts-bmw-e9x-e8x-n5x 80A version. Nice upgrade from stock. No crazy NVH.
I don't meant to de rail the thread here but i got 80A trans mounts and it made the NVH unbearable. I did only put 800km's on them at most. Do they get better with time?

Why not just make a custom engine mount as I have had to do for my ST kits. Some of the US kits have engine mount relocation too. Best way to gain clearance. It does take quite some effort to get a mount with no NVH.

Yeah, I have read a lot of bad things about tranny mounts and lots of NVH. Because of this I went with the Rogue ones which seem perfect to me and added no NVH that I could notice. Much much firmer than stock once you have them out and compare them. Lots of very positive reviews of them too vs. other solid mounts seem to have tons of NVH.

Again with the Revshift 80A MM I felt next nothing NVH, the engine is very firmly held but in a not too firm way ;)

Revshift 80A engine mounts, with Rouge trans mounts it is.

Are you still using rubber in the custom mount?

Thanks for the suggestion, I'm going to avoid polyurethane for the engine mount because I can't say for sure what kind of temps it will see for repeated abuse on track and heat shielding removes the ability for quick visual inspection.

Yes, I use a rubber mount. Tried the poly on a race mount and too hard for my liking although totally fine with the idle turned up a little.

Confirmed another unhappy 034 mount... getting it out hasn't helped me much cause I need to get the block frame/mount out as well and some d8ckhead ground off one of the bolt heads. Not only that, the engine looks like it has been lifted on the right side against the cast oil pan and its got hairline cracks in it. Awesome.

I just found out over the weekend my driver 034 motor mount is bad. It isn't dropping out the bottom but it is completely loose inside of the aluminum frame.

Curious why you don't want to go with OEM mounts? I actually went to BMW and bought OEM mounts over the weekend ($300) because i thought i was going to have all the parts to put the car together. Turns out I don't so now wish I would have just ordered some from FCP or went with the Revshift ones. I might still do that and sell the OEM.

I might, see first post. oem mounts will also fail / degrade sooner or later, hopefully just later. So its weighing up the nvh benefits of oem versus the possible repairs on other parts for a fail in the future. Ill look into modifying the oem mounts as an option to restrict the collapse height when they do go.

I thought you were talking about sticking old oem mounts and using the inserts to stiffen them up/give them more life. I would think brand new ones would be fine for the duration of you owning the car. I had 130k miles on my car and nothing were wrong with them. But I thought it would be good to go with 034 and here I am buying new ones again.

I did go ahead and purchase the revshift. I will put those on first and if I don't like the nvh i will end up throwing the oem on. But reviews say the revshift don't add any more nvh. maybe a few people said it did but raised idle to get rid of it but i already raised it due to clutch chatter.

Revshift mounts came in today. I ordered them from FCP Euro because of the easy warranty and they deliver the next day. They came silver, not anodized black like the pictures. I emailed them and due to covid they are not doing anodizing. but they look solid. Should hopefully have them on this weekend.

@Torgus is spot on:
1) use Rogue Engineering trans mounts. Poly sucks for most applications, and the trans is no exception.
2) Revshift 80A ... poly here because choices are otherwise elusive. Works fine. Barely any NVH in my experience. They don't seem to fail.

FTW the stock BMW mounts don't like these motors, at least with any power. My passenger-side motor mount had collapsed significantly with about 25k miles of use.

I put about 200 miles on Revshift 80A mounts and absolutely hated them. I don't see how people don't notice any difference but it is night and day difference for me. Can't hear shit with those revshift mounts. I would rather go through OEM mounts every 10k miles than to use those revshift ones.

Maybe a function of how much noise the rest of the car is making

Did you raise your idle at all? I am using a driver's side stock/034 mount along with a BFI passenger side mount. The mount is very nice, but it does add a lot of NVH. I had to raise my idle to 950 to keep it from rattling so bad you can't use the rear view mirror. I'd expect the same from pretty much any afermarket poly mount.

Stick or auto? My stick car is quiet with them. A little vibration at idle some times, but so little I never touched the idle.
