Hey, Im curious, if one has a 2012 pwg 335i, can you just install an ewg turbo while keeping the stock dme? does the harness need to be replaced to include some extra connections for EWG control? whould tuning software, like MHD, see it as ewg turbo?

There are similar topics here like this, but no one responds there anymore.

I don't know if it has been done, but it defintaley wouldn't be plug and play. The EWG actuator has wires for controlling the stepper motor and wires for position feedback. Not sure the PWG DME has the capabilities for that? If it does, you'd also need to figure out how to configure that in the DME and a retune for the EWG.

Also, you'd need a custom downpipe, as EWG has a bigger turbine outlet flange than the PWG turbo, and the e & f series have different style connections between the downpipe & mid pipes. Also not sure if the compressor outlets are positioned any differently?

What is the goal by using an EWG turbo with a PWG DME?

Ive done it, but the build is a bit fucky and I want to sort it out. Ive used ewg turbo with DP and cooling hose, ewg harness, DME from 2015 car (recently found out its from active hybrid.. mevd172Y), injectors from 2015 car.

Car runs, MHD works and sees it as EWG, BUT oil measurement through CIC is fucked, it never shows level as max, 3/4 at most. Sometimes I get Rich mixture error, but Its erasable. Once flashed with MHD, I get errors about something called Flexray and some other electronics and options, like all around view camera, that my car doesnt possess. Car runs through a shit ton of oil on stage 2+, maybe 1L per 1k km.. Might be related to wrong DME, nothing leaks, valve seals are new, turbo is low mileage, 40k km..

I just want to know if I can somehow run my stock DME on this setup.. This guy claims to have done it but isnt responding

Oh, I remember that thread. I don't think he used the ewg turbo - his replacement engine was ewg, so I think he took off the parts that didn't match his original pwg motor (the vacuum pump/hpfp assembly, harness, and I assume the ewg turbo (though he didn't specifically mention the turbo)). So he basically converted the ewg replacement motor into pwg to work with his original DME. At least that was my interpretation.

so Ive found out, that my original DME, MEVD172S goes up to late 2015s. Maybe with a software update, it could run this build fine

Im currently working on a project with a F10 that is getting a full build such as closed deck, n54 crank etc goal is +800whp however needing to run it with EWG now as far as DMEs go I can mofidfy ISN, VIN and reset hours so it can take coding I just would need to know if the MEVD17.2.S did infact support pre and post flexray? if so that might be the way to go is with that DME?

That's pretty sweet, I strongly considered using that for my EFR build and going internal wastegate. In the end though I decided against it, just because I didn't have an idea how reliable the controller would be, and I'd hate to go with that set up, and not know if that controller would continue to be available down the road a few years if I ran into problems.

Though I’m always in agreement with caution, being overly skeptical is exactly what would limit future development/evolution of any product which will almost always ensure that it /they eventually die in the marketplace.
