My poor outlet install caught up with me

This is on my Z4
I knew last season after a track day I burned my outlet pipe but it held boost so I let it ride.

This season it finally let go while working on the new flex fuel tune with BQ. The logs had some crazy wgdc and BQ suggested I look for a leak. Ha... I knew right where I was going to look...

I wrapped mine completely in heat tape before I installed it, hopefully it holds up. I did get under and notice a heat shield kind of poking it and got worried

Oh boy yours is cut way shorter then mine I've been wanting to try slide on turbo further cause my inlet sits on it and when real hot they start to deform eachother but if yours did that im screwed between that and 034 motor mount lol

sorry to hear, after personally doing mmp inlets and outlets, I think the best option would be to go with metal upgraded outlets next, its just even wrapping, metal shields, and wtv custom work you do next, its just a band-aid in my opinion. Curious to see what you will do next !

my mmps melted and I always had issues with them.

I recommend the metal PSP outlet, it the superior outlet by far given what is on the market.

Sorry to see this. A buddy just fried his MMP outlet on his Z4 over the weekend. Mine look fine but I suspect it's a matter of time.

I didn't care for the close proximity of the MMP outlets and ended up taking a sheet of felpro exhaust gasket board that I had laying around and screwed it to the boost solenoid pan as a barrier. I assume if it burns through that, the outlets don't stand a chance anyways.

I have vtt silicone outlets thinking of going to their aluminum . I like the idea of being able to do reflective high heat paint on outlets. I really wish someone would make double wall insulated outlets but i guess before fmic not as big of a deal. i just hate that my inlet touches my outlet but i guess that's a personal prob lol curious if others got them to not touch?

MMP outlets are trash.

This isn't an MMP issue, no silicone outlet on the market can handle physically touching the exhaust manifold even with heat wrapping.

It is worth pointing out we have been selling our silicone outlets now for nearly 2 years and to the tune of about 150 sets around the world. In this amount of time we have had 2 issues, both of which did not have our recommended heat shields installed. We also recently had another tail section presumably fail as well, but no details or pictures were provided so it could've been a simple puncture.

Not saying that aluminum isn't superior (it is!), or that silicone will never fail (it will eventually!); just more so that when a silicone product has a better design, an arguably better composition with certain better rigidity, and actually installs without an all-out battle... then these types of failures will become less likely to happen (or over a much longer duration). Buying products because they are cheaper (ie. $50 less) doesn't usually get you what is the most ideal.

These outlets were made to 2" ID specs which puts them around 2.4" OD, this size material doesn't have the greatest tight bend ability so you end up with even closer proximity to the manifold and other hot parts. They also follow the identical OEM route as they directly match the OEM piping in design.

This was all done for a few reasons:
1) To tout about big "FLOW", which really matters nothing in these outlet scenarios where even 1.5"+ is more than enough for the power ranges we are dealing with.
2) They are designed ultimately to be compatible with the bigger MMP TD04 compressor housings which have a 2" outlet connection. So basically the outlet is "universal" for stock turbo housings (with a very large transitional adapter) or the larger TD04 compressor housings.
3) OEM routing meant ease of design and no effort in time, this simple copy meant less efforts applied to move the (much larger OD and fragile) silicone as far away as possible from all the hot parts.

There simply is not the real estate to work with in these areas, and it is not worth compromising longevity for flow (from an overly large outlet).

Almost the same thing happened to my MMP silicone outlet as well and had it heavily insulated. Not enough to keep it from burning a small hole in it though. Only found it by smoke testing the engine. Will never put another silicone outlet on an N54. Not the environment for silicone if you are expecting it to last and be trouble free.

No amount of heat tape or reinforcement will keep the hose from burning. I have tried two times and all have burnt even after more trimming and readjusting. I now have the PSP aluminum kit and should have done it long ago and saved money and time...because after spending the time and money to repeatedly try to make it work with the silicon...you have spend more than if you would have just bought the PSP or VTT kit.
