So I thought I'd start to document my jourmey on taking a bog stock 35is to the next level.

Having done the journey with a AY E89 20i Msport Auto, some parts of this journey will be very similar.

However, as I have been on this journey before, in some cases, for the sake of change and variety I've altered /sourced differnt parts.

So the 2011 35is with 50k miles and 4 previous owners came to me after lurking on various sites watching the inflated sales price come down from £23k to around £19k.

The car had a part BMW , part low grade Indy service history and looked like it had been garaged most of its life and not used hard.

It was fairly 'fully loaded' with most UK options, Idrive, extended USB/Blutooth, electrically heated/adjustable eats, PDC, 14 speaker DSP HiFi etc

First thing was to swap the Zito 935s running GY Asy 5 235/40 18 and 265/35 18 from the 20o to the 35is.

Ride and handling much better..still very disappointed in the adaptive suspension especially 2 up.

Popped in some high intensity LEDS in the DRLs and fitted an offical set of BMW black grills.

Next a walnut blast to take out about 1mm of very hardened carbon on the intake ports, fresh NGK 1 stage colder plugs and fresh air filter.

Then a baseline dyno run (before which number 2 coil went south), then a MHD stage 1+ re-map by myself and a second dyno run..moving from around 345BHP to 390 BHP and torque up from 500 to 550 nm (UK tends to use crank BHP and I've used this dyno a lot)

So I found a good tech in my local town (he used to twirl the spanners for some of the fastest Isle of Man racers!

I've entrusted him with a lot of the work..

We are now about 75% there.

Work so far has been.

  1. Remove 6 pot BMW Performance Brake kit (Bembo) from my 20i and fit to 35is
  2. Remove the matching drilled n vented 35is rear discs and calipers in Phoenix Gold from 20i to 35is
  3. Fit Ohlins Road and Track to 35is (the fact that the rears are NOT coilovers through us for a while)
  4. Move Wagner Evo FMIC from 20i to 35is
  5. Fit VSRF de-cat down pipes (seems to need a bit of a cut n shut on the exhaust system to take the preload out of the system)
  6. Bought some re-furb BMW 437M alloys to be mated to Michelin Pilot Sport 4S in 235/35 19 and 275/30 19
  7. Fit new Index 12 injectors and new coils at the same time
  8. Fit Quaife LSD
  9. Fit M3 Steering linkages, rear M3 RTABs and H&R ARBs

Seperately I've fitted some Eton mid range speakers to replace the 6 mid range speakers on the 14 speaker DSP option setup

I've done the gloss black version of the LCI side repeaters.

Still to do

Repaint rear MSport valance so rear is yellow, black, yellow rather than yellow, yellow, black.

Fit n paint rear boot C/F spoiler (when it finishes its 9 week so far journey from China)

Paint rear roll over covers gloss black

Fit rest of Audison/ Rockford speakers and install Audiotec Fischer Match 10 DSP and Helix SDM 125 MOST to Audiotec interface unit.

If you have handling issues (I see you are moving to Öhlins) let me know, and I'll see if I can lend a hand remotely. I'm plugged in with Barry Battle @ 3DM Suspensions that has done a lot of development for products for Öhlins USA. He did all the development and tuning work on my Z4 ... it was a development car for him.

Hello Filipo, thanks for your kind offer..I'm waiting for the tech to finish installing all the new 'toys' and we will see how she feels..once I've got an assessment of the before and after and the benchmark that was my well sorted 20i then I'll come back with observations and maybe you can help me then? best Peter

So this stage of updates and upgrades nearly completed..FWIW don't buy Hella branded coils..they don't fit..to fat to stay in the spark plug tunnel!

2021-11-25 10.48.53 compressed.jpg

New index 12 injectors in, 6 pot Brembo brakes in , Ohlins R+T in, VSRF catless downpipes in (required a bit of exhaust system trimming to fit), H&R ARBs, M3 RTABs/steering linkages/ Upgraded bushes in top M3 steering arm, Wagner EVO 1 in, just going to fit NGK coils to replace duff Hella ones. MHD stage2+ map applied, xHP stage 2 applied, coded adaptive dampers off, coded performance brake on, fitted 437Ms with 235/35 19 and 275/30 Michelin PS4S..

New carbon fibre rear spoiler arrived today..3 months since it was ordered, exactly..good job it was air freighted, might try sea freight next time..quality looks very good, not tried a fit yet, seems a pity to colour match it..but that's where its going next..

So 500 miles into my shakedown run…due to weather and just sitting mostly at speed on motorways and dual carriageways (real novelty for us in the Scottish Borders) with the hood up..issues and observations so far.

Ohlins coilover so so much better than stock adaptive suspension..the settings are Ohlins recommended…so rear sits at stock reference height and front 10mm lower..dampers front rear at 10 click settings.

Ride is compliant, controlled, no jarring , no wallowing, no bottoming ..I’m sure upping the ante later may need some tweaking but what a change.

Roll is negligible.

Steering much more precise.

19” 437Ms with Michelin PS4S very nice , no obvious foibles.

Was getting wheel spin in 6th and 7th when accelerating to overtake. Wet n greasy roads .

Quaife LSD kept both wheels in check with small amount of yoh- yoh through the wheels as they each gripped and then lost it but kept going straight.

Electronic diff / traction control coded out..didn’t try the same trick mid corner…

Unfair comparison but seems a small amount of road vibration through the new components into the chassis..

VSRF downpipes also seem to induce some harshness at certain points plus amplifies the 2000 rpm drone.

Maybe with top down you wouldn’t notice these vibrations amongst the other noises.

Despite this the sum of all these vibrations was way less than how it felt running on 18” OE runflats.

At one point had a cylinder 1 and 2 misfire when accelerating hard on the motorway.

Reset and flashed a stage 2 map to see if that changes it..

Also tried linear throttle mode at the time..felt it was a retrograde move in isolation…made car feel flat..

However then, subsequently click the throttle lag from normal to M1…now this is more like it..the combo works well on the last remaining 15 miles I tried it.

Sitting for 8 hours in a car doing not a lot you notice things…drivers door does not sit flush with body..top of the door line sits out by 1-2mm and lower than the body line at back by 1-2mm… any suggestions?

Average fuel consumption was 30.9 at an average speed over 6 hours of 69.5..

So getting there..still notice the weight on / over / past the front end..not as nimble as the old 20i despite the goodies..

So added the Nexsys B58 upgraded coil kit..about a 4 hour job for me…unpicking the plastic tray was the hardest piece.

Re-gapped the plugs to 25 thou from 30 thou at the same time.

Coincided with MHD V10 OTS maps so coded the B58 coil mode, linear throttle,M throttle response and stage 2+ on 98 Ron fuel.

Will get a dyno run on it next week.

Thanks for posting! I'm curious, shouldn't stock number be 300hp crank, or 270 -280 ish whp? These are showing significantly higher than that for stock🤷‍♂️

Yes and also the torque figure for the 35is on a rolling road dyno shows the overboost function working adding another 50nm of torque on the stock run..

Another update...never quite liked the look of the 437Ms..IMHO never suited the car..so bought some 19" Apex Arc-8s.

Unfortunately for me only came in satin black so had my local guy scuff up the brand new wheels and then spray them in gloss black and lacquered.

Always been a big fan of Conti tyres and fitted the new Conti Sports Contact 7s 245/35 19 and 275/30 19 onto the 8.5J and 9.5J Arc-8s.

If handling and feel are your priorities than these tyres edge out the Michelin MP4S by some way..bliss..

After having fitted a variety of suspension / steering parts..Ohlins R+t, M3 steering linkages, monoball steering bushes, M3 trailing arm bushes, H&R ARBs, Meyle HD steering arms, Powerflex rear camber arms, front camber plates, I've had the guys fitting them re-align things, but not very well..the last guys got the ride height fairly well but I could see visually the rear wheel cambers were off.

They were so bad in the end I used a spirit level against the tyre wall and an iphone app to try and get them closer to OE spec.

Having failed locally to find anyone up to it /willing I was recommended Automek in East Kilbride.

Had a happy morning there today..top notch folks with state of the art kit and very very knowledgeable.

As you can see (although the red colour is not necessarily an overall indicator) the front cambers were different, the front LHS toe was out not in and the rear LHS toe was massively out.

Despite lots of adjustablity from the parts I fitted, we couldn't get the rear camber in on both sides without assymetrical rear toes..so we agreed to focus on rear toe and let the camber come out a bit.

Have to say the drive back from East Kilbride down to Moffat and then past Marys Loch was sooo much better..

Hi ponder,
Got a question about your tyre/rim combo, I want to change to the same tyre widths. But am afraid that they will rub in the wheel well. What ET values do your rims have and do you have any problems with rubbing of the tyres on the chassis ore wheel well? Plus you have been driving this combo now for some time, how do you like it in general?

Thanks in advance,
Gr Armando,
