335is/550i clutch vs. Motive SST

I got the earliest model from PTF when they teamed with spec. When others were having issues, we had none. All the issues are sorted now. Just order the twin disk with sprung hubs, and the SMFW in steel. Make sure whoever installs it, does it CORRECTLY! The tool spec gives is not good enough, you need two tools for the twin disks, the factory tool, and the spline alignment tool. Assembling a clutch, and installing it, takes care, and knowledge, most clutch issues we are are when its not done right

If there was nothing wrong with spec clutches why did david from spec try to pass of a worn out clutch from another customers car in the other forum thread and when confronted with this he stopped answering emails ?

Whatever you just tried to say is hard to follow. So how many spec clutches have you used? Because we use them in everything. You know to break records in the 1/2 mile, WHP, WTQ, the list goes on. We base our conclusions on actual testing, not what we see on the internets. In our actual testing, Spec has had the best pedal feel, longest life, and best holding power. The only issue we ever had was welding a Stage 3+ at the strip, and that was caused by poor driving.

I used one clutch and it was utter rubbish and sold it off quickly, after I done a few quick searches and I'm not the only one that had issues.

Maybe the current gen of clutches have better QC but it doesn't justify the poor customer service many have received in the past from spec.

Currently I'm running a custom 1 off clutch built by a local shop and its been awesome with no issues what so ever.

Spec will never get a dollar from me ever again, their customer service sucks balls.

I can tell you really really want to argue about clutches. I on the other hand do not. Run whatever makes you all tingly inside. We will continue to run what works for us. Which is Spec products. You have a great weekend sir!

I don't want to argue about it Tony, just than companies with bad customer service and poor QC should not be praised.

Most companies have QC issues at some stage but its how they handle them is whats sets them apart unlike spec.

If you've got a bad experience, share it. If you've got a good experience, share it. Telling Tony he shouldn't praise a company based off his personal experience is like saying a company shouldn't be criticized when someone has a bad experience.

Its not hard to understand why people believe different things when their experiences are different. There is no need to be anti-company for no reason, just like we don't need people getting paid to do fake reviews, etc. Encouraging Tony or anyone to not voice their honest opinion, is... Odd?

The problem is that he's not just giving his opinion, he is stating his opinion as fact. As usual, as Tony sees it, everyone else is wrong because he hasnt had an issue with his 800hp shop car that uses it, that gets driven to the dyno and back to its parking space, outside of the occasional 1/2 mile event. As I am sure you have seen, there are MUTIPLE people having MULTIPLE issues with their products across MULTIPLE forums and car types and Spec is not stepping up to warranty these issues. All it takes to prove this is to put this simple phase into google "spec clutch failure". Spec has a history of this dating back more than a few years.

Tony's determination to discredit people who are trying to warn people is...very Tony like. Nevermind.

I think anyone who has an opinion should believe in their opinion, no? I didn't re-read everything but if he was saying that other people aren't allowed to say negative things about a company then I suppose that would be different. Telling other people to not share their opinion is what I'm talking about I suppose. I can see how this can be read more than one way however.

Well he implied that we are wrong and there is lots of misinformation in the other thread

He is stating a fact that spec looked after him but im stating a fact that spec dont give a shit about individuals and when he is representing a workshop of course they'll look after him

Im not bad mouthing spec just stating pure facts
That spec dont give a shit and if you need warranty good luck with that, your on your own.

I have no experience with spec myself, so I'm interested to hear everyone's opinion. That doesn't sound good though

For what it's worth, so far - granted I'm still in the break-on period - I've had no i ssues with the clutch I have. As Tony suggested, I raised the RPMs to 900 and can barely hear the SMFW rattle. Everything else is as expected or better. I'll be sure to report later on, once I have a couple of drag strip days and a few more miles on it.

No I did not imply you are wrong, yes there is a lot of misinformation in that thread. The facts remain most clutch issues arise from poor install or break in. Not all but most, every clutch company has had their share of issues. We found the least amount of issues, basically none when using spec products. Your experience may be different, great, don't run spec then. Problem solved

I know they guy who had the clutch installed and he is the most anal arsehole when it comes to his car and the way things are done on it.

The installer has installed a number of these in the past with no issues bar this one.

He just cant believe spec wont honour their warranty terms.

He was mechanic himself in the past and only lets one mechanic touch his car, that's why he never has any issues.

He has been running a 550i clutch since pulling the spec/motiv clutch out and at its lasted three times longer (still going)

I pulled mine out not long after that because I didn't want the same issues and was able to recover most of my money.

Spec wont honour their warranty terms that's all I'm saying and your left thousands of dollars out of pocket.

Please post your experience - good, bad or indifferent. I find that folks who have had a positive experience don't post anything because they're satisfied and there's nothing to complain about. Then, on the flip side, if there are any issues - we're sure to hear about it and we only see the issues. It's good to be aware of the issues but we also need to share the positive experiences as well.
