VTT / Precision Raceworks Coil install / Results thread

Ok guys so we got the Precision Raceworks coil packs installed. This will be our review, and results thread.

First off the kit comes very nice as far as fit, and finish. Everything fits well, and is high quality. Install is straight forward per the install guide but we do want to add a couple things.

First off you need this depin tool, its cheap, and it makes your life SO MUCH easier. Trying to depin these without the proper tool is a pain.

Next you want this dielectric grease. The plug connections are tight, and need to pushed down hard to seat properly. This on both the boots going to the plugs, and the coil plug wires make them slide on easily, and snap into place. Ok now on to the results. We wanted this to be about hardware ONLY. So we literally opened up MHD, loaded the same tune we had been running, checked the PR Coils check box, and flashed. So the tune was 100% identical to what we had been running except for dwell, and spark table changes for the new coils.

During install I had opened the gap from .018 to .024, I can say even for our low boost this was too much. I had random misfires, and had to drop the gap down to .022, and all the misfires went away. So we were able to pick up .004 gap, with no misfires. Before if we got anything over .018 at all that cylinder would misfire heavily

The first run, I thought something was not right, we had picked up around 110WTQ in the mid range, almost 70WHP, and the car simply made a ton more power, and tq from the time we went WOT to 6500 or so. No real gains up top because well the turbos are honest struggling up there currently

That first run we blew an intercooler hose underneath so I had to pull the car off the dyno, and put it on the lift. No time that day so we went home, and came back the next day, fixed the hose, and back on the dyno she went. I was skeptical the gains were going to be there in back to back pulls. Well once back on the dyno, the data was quantified, every run was the same. Massive gains down low, and smooth pulls all the way up. Car seems to idle smoother, and pull smoother as well.

In other words for the price of this upgrade, they gain insane amounts of power, and tq at least in our testing, you can increase plug gap, and the car seems smoother. Really a no brainer

Misfires at .024 is disappointing. I am installing my PR coils today and will back off plugs gap to .022 based on Tony's experience. I was originally planning on .026.

Nice work Tony! Nice write up and good call on the dielectric grease. I think you were the biggest skeptic too lol, I'm impressed and this really showcases how far we've exceeded the factory ignition.

You should look at the torque as a measure of cylinder pressure, not his boost in this instance. Low rpm, high pressure, lean mixture e85 is the hardest to ignite. It's why multispark even exists for the mid range.

Thanks Tony I was waiting for something like this as the other coils didn't have any data. This will be my next mod! Sent you a pm on something else when you get a chance though I'm sure you're busy

So, just to clarify with the ignition upgrade you went from: 752hp, 658tq to 768hq 733tq?

If so, was that the only thing you changed? Did you change up the ignition timing due to the new limits to achieve those gains or was it the cleaner/more powerful spark that gained you all that torque?

Great post! Thanks for the info and install tips. Also is that fuel rail just capped off and with injectors plugging the holes for port injection? Or is this car using port injection?

In our testing we noticed gains in the same area, up top didn't seem to gain as much even with turbos that had plenty more to give. We were also able to test at .031 at 750whp with no misfires. We do suggest running a more reasonable gap around .026 for longetivity tho.

Pretty wild how inefficient the stock coils are at such high load in the mid range. I'll def be keeping my eye on these as the new valve covers start hitting the market.

So looking at the engine shot of Tony's car, I can't help buy notice he might be doing an idea I've been thinking of for awhile now!!!

Is he using the factory vacuum pump to scavenge the crank case?? He has what looks like the boost line tied into the front of his catch can? Please tell me this is feasible :)
