Hey guys

Ive been searching for info, but cant really find a dedicated thread anywhere on this issue.

So Ive been researching to go ST, and with a top mount it seems the valve cover windscreen filler tube and associated wiring nearby.

I was intending to have hot side of turbo, down pipe & manifold thermal coated and using a turbo blanket also.

Would this be enough? Are all blankets created equal? PTP turbo blankets keep popping up as a great product (along with DEI)

https://www.ptpturboblankets.com/collections/large-t4

I would love to see someone have some high quality heat shields from this co made up:

http://www.turbosource.com/TurboSource-Header-Heatshield-p/ts3-03-04156.htm

This stuff from a aesthetic point of view would look OK compared to the gold reflective tape:

https://www.heatshieldproducts.com/cobra-cloth

https://www.heatshieldproducts.com/lava-shield

It would be great to see what you guys have done on your ST setups and what works etc and if anyone has any type of data or feedback/advice.

Whilst its on a honda its good reading and would be great to have some data analysis for an N54 in a similar fashion :)

I had all of my hot parts ceramic coated in side and out. I also have a turbo blanket and heat shield. What I don't have yet is feedback because I'm in the middle of the installation haha. So sorry for that.

Good timing on this thread. I'm installing a project box in my fender for aftermarket lighting ballasts this weekend and will go over how I re positioned wiring and such. I'll have a good opportunity for photos and will update the thread.

There are a few heat shields that you won't need anymore when you remove your twins. I re commissioned them to keep everything nice and cool. The gold tape is pricey but that stuff is awesome, don't settle for anything less. There is a rating for contact heat and radiant heat, make sure you check those numbers before you buy anything.

I have the china blanket that came with my jpworkz kit. It works just fine. I can pop the hood and put my hand on it after a drive. I wouldn't say ptp/dei is overpriced but. The cheaper options work. Take a look on Amazon and read some reviews

My luck wasn't great with the cheaper Amazon blankets. After about 10k it started falling apart and the internal stuffing was smoking. Luckily the hood is vented and I noticed it before it became a fire

I don't even use a turbo snuggie now. Have a few projects on the burner and one is a custom fabbed heat shield. Hopefully can make time to finalize this weekend.

For the sake of a few hundred bucks I think I'll go with DEI or PTP over a Chinese option.

I was reading this guy on the supra forums got a Thermal zero made in the usa item for $88usd delivered so wouldnt mind some more info on that!

I like this product a its black and I want to keep everything 'stealth' as possible (I'm not one for blinged out engine bays)

Haha no worries!

You're essentially doing what I had in mind (forgot about the heat shield over the manifold)

I was curious in how effective the coating is and if there is of any benefit to add exhaust wrap to a ceramic coated component to further insulate to reduce radiating heat even further?

Will be looking fwd to your build and subsequent feedback once up and running!

Yeah thats what I've been reading that the cheaper blankets fail over time with the threads etc and the insulation breaks down.

This video is a good demo:

Re route wire
Heat shield
Reflective tape side of engine cover
Reflective tape laid across wiring under cover

Not in view is the DocRace heat shield. Can easily be fabbed with thin aluminum.
Wrapped only what is seen. Manifold is bare

Done.

The window washer fill neck can be re routed to the leaf catcher screen in the back

Does the doc race heat shield fit with the stock engine cover on with a Jpworkz kit? I emailed doc race and never received an anwser.

Probably because DR has no way of knowing. Doubt anyone there is running a JP kit lol.

My money is on yes. It is pretty snug against the block and not extraordinarily thick.

Best to wrap rather than ceramic coat(unless it's a super thick coating)

Ceramic coating is more of a corrosion resistant addiditive

While I would agree with you in Arizona you should never use wrap here in Florida because the wrap keeps the moisture held into the pipe and causes all sorts of other problems. The answer here is coating everytime.

Has anyone tested jet hot coating? I am debating on getting my ST setup coated in this vs. other options. Their images / videos look promising. Also, if anyone has tested, what's the cost look like?

Get the manifold coated at least. That's the most expensive hot part that also experiences the highest temp. You don't want corrosion to ruin it down the line.

DP can be wrapped depending on your climate.

I'm in AZ where humidity isn't really an issue. But I would love to not use wrap if I could just use a top of the line heat coating.
JETHot claims that their coating has been used on jets for heat control and wraps are not needed. That's why I'm curious if anyone has tested before. On a side note they are located ~20 min from me so that's another positive
