I've been running this pump for the last month or so and now that spool performance have officially announced it and with Ajay's permission i'd like to start a discussion.

spool f series hpfp.jpg

Here's what came bundled with it :

My impressions : Installation was a breeze according to my mechanic. Once installed my tuner (David Shoup) sent me a base map and initially we had some issues with cold start where the rail pressure would be too high and the car would crank and won't start. Once MHD defined the needed tables that was almost solved.
Almost because i still have the occasional hiccup upon cold start but it's completely usable, just not smooth startup as it was before. Otherwise the pump performs just like stock. No issues whatsoever.
I have some logs but we are still running a low boost map while dialing in fueling. Here's one, as you can see rail pressure is almost perfectly following the requested pressure. I'll post logs with higher boost once we get there. I am sure it'll hold it just fine.

Another issue i'm experiencing is a faint ticking noise that is RPM dependant which we (me and David) suspect to be the HPFP since i noticed it around the time we installed the pump.
I have not dug into this further, and it being the hpfp is just an assumption, can be something else entirely, will report back once i know more, but would love to hear other's experiences with it.

Video of the ticking noise :

Interested in seeing how this pump fairs in reviews. I have the XDI35. It chirps, or ticks, some, too. This new Spool pump looks remarkably similar. All the way down to the misplaced o-ring seal that actually seals nothing at all.

intetesting. This seems to confirm that the ticking I hear is the Hpfp. Did you hear the sound in the video I posted ? Is it similar ?

Would you recommend the Spool Performance 10 micron inline filter to be used with the FX-150 pump? Thoughts on how it impacts the FX-150's performance?

There's an XDI HPFP installation guide that mentioned installing a noise insulator over the pump to address ticking.

Those instructions for the Ford application probably references an OEM noise insulator. There's nothing like that for the N55 HPFP.

I'm running a 40 micron Russell AN fitting filter. I'd recommend running something in front of the pump, since only the fuel tank pickup sock will do any filtering otherwise. The filter will far outflow the pump, so no performance hit.

I couldn't quite here much of anything going on in that video. My pump chirps mildly under load until it's warmed up. Worse in the cold, better in the summer. I'll try to get a video of it sometime.

I'm seriously considering putting a fuel filter before the HPFP, bet it'll contribute to the longevity of the pump and the injectors, i had an injector fail on me right after i installed the pump) not sure which one to use though. Bosch seems to recommend 5 micron for direct injection systems while spool's one is 10 microns and is on the expensive side.

i'd appreciate the video. Weird you couldn't hear it - it's quite audible.

That noise is part of the nature of these pumps. The OEM pumps are designed to try and limit the noise (you can see it in the product notes for some of the Bosch iterations), as is the tuning strategy controlling the inlet valve. Usually at low load there is an additional pulse sent to the valve to limit the noise.

So are you saying this is an exact copy of the XDI35? I’m interested in seeing the reviews on it as well.

Not an exact copy, but obviously heavily based on that design. They both place the o-ring on the pump body to seal to the included mounting flange, but no provision to seal their flange to the vacuum pump. I used some spray gasket to seal it there. Otherwise, it has the potential to weep lubrication from the vacuum pump.

yeah their is only so much you can do on a product design That’s a specific part. Hopefully one of the other address’s that possible issue.

that chirping / ticking is driving me nuts lol, i have to figure out a way to insulate that noise.

did you ever figure out the noise????

you experience it too ?

I didn't completely fix it but David Shoup (my tuner) was able to reduce the noise quite a bit programatically. I think Ajay has the tables / modifications for that. I can still hear it but it's much much more tolerable.
