I used to see oil temps of up to 265F after a hard drive uphill during the summer with the AC on, with ambient temps in the 90-95 range on a 135 with a stock untouched cooling setup. I have since switched to an N55 oil water2oil cooler, CSF rad + aux rad, and temps appear to go no higher than 230F, although it is still early days...

Damn, 265F? Here in south Texas with 130 or so days over 100F I have never seen north of 250F before changing the oil thermostat to a FTP unit,and now I see maybe 230F at the highest when beating on it in traffic in the summer with the AC at full blast. The first pic is in traffic. The second screen shot I was beating on it pretty hard (see max boost)

Auto, MHD is set to Sport cooling mode.

operating temp Ideally you want your oil temp between 210-230. no more than 240-250 on hard driving. You dont want oil temps much lower than 200 degrees because you lose the ability to burn off fuel and condensation dilution.

I was under the impression that you can run a modern hi-po synthetic oil at up to 300F before it starts breaking down, at the cost of reduced oil change intervals perhaps. Plus you can always go up a viscosity grade to compensate if need be... Here is an interesting link for you:

Oh, absolutely. however, my above recommendation was for the 98% of people sign these cars. as most people you know will not buy top shelf formulas.

Yesterday highway cruising 2 hours, 80MPH, 30F, 6AT, AWD, 93OCT, stock oil cooler and thermostat, stock turbos: oil temps were steady-state in the 220-230 range.
And by the way, coolant temps were around 201F (MHD sport cooling) and transmission temps were 151-154F.
But then that Audi a$$orifice annoyed me so my oil temps went up to 235F, coolant went down to 180F, and tranny temps increased to 165F. :p

Very non-scientific but,
Saturday I had a good ice racing event. Did about 20 min of hot laps per hour.

ambient temp, about 25*F
engine oil temp pretty stable at about 230's (cooler blocked by snow)
engine coolant temps average 218
trans temps about 160 start and rise to 248 highest I seen

FBO, etc. Fresh Castrol 0-40, load limited to 140 (~14psi)
mostly 3rd and some 4th on track.
total track time of 1.75 hrs.
