Uhm.. Oil Thermostat. Why is this different than every other N54 I've seen? Even other e89 Z4s..

I was planning on upgrading to the Mosselman upgraded oil thermostat since my N54 tends to run hot, but I just noticed that my oil filter housing assembly doesn't have the oil thermostat attached to it. Is it because it's a 2009 e89 Z4? One of the first ones made and it's somehow different? I don't understand this as earlier 335i N54s have the oil thermostat at the front of the oil filter housing. I've looked at other videos of e89 Z4s and theirs have the same thing; oil thermostat attached to the filter assembly. I'll attach photos. Any help would be much appreciated! Very confused.

Appreciate your time,
Brandon

Yikes... No wonder my car runs hot. What were they thinking?! I wonder if I could simply buy your OEM filter assembly and have it plug and play and upgrade to the mosselman thermostat. Very odd that they would choose to do this.

I assume you can buy the parts to make a retrofit..whether an alternative solution is a 3rd party cooler..if you do choose a retrofit then for sure the Mosselman does work…takes a good 10c-15c off what you would see otherwise..

Yeah, I'm definitely going to try and make the retrofit work because no oil cooler is a damn joke. My oil temps run at 240 - 245F (approx 115 - 117c) which is unacceptable. That will kill my motor a lot sooner. I was wondering why other people's N54s run cooler than mine.. Now I know. At least my motor only has 38k on it. Not bad for a 2009 if you ask me.. :smirk: Just curious, but around what temps does your Z4 run at? Regular to rough driving?

Sounds like I'd need to buy an upgraded oil cooler and try and find someone who knows how to retrofit it on. I'm going to buy the OEM style filter housing you have and see what I'd need to do. Maybe I can figure it out on my own.

BTW, love the yellow on your Z4 my man! Looks great! My Z4 didn't even come with the engine bay painted.. I can't really complain since I bought the car with 20k miles on it for $20,000 5 years ago. Was an absolute steal. The dealership priced it improperly and the owner came up to me in the midst of the sale and tried to tell me that they can't sell it to me at that price and it was a fault on their end. I stood my ground and told them that they have to honor the listed price hah.

My oil gauge is in C…mid temp is 120c..previous to the Mosselman it would run 120c easily and would hit 130c when provoked a bit..given a pretty cool climate here…

Now it runs 105c-110c in cruise..hits 120c when provoked maybe 125c on a really hot day ..

What I do notice is that the engine bay is no longer roasting…previously popping the bonnet would hit me with a wave of heat..not good for the plastics and rubber…now it’s markedly cooler..
