Oil Cooler Delete

For reasons I'd like to delete my oil cooler, however, as I'm in the UK getting a hold of a coolerless OFH is tricky (I think all UK cars came with coolers, or it at least appears the case).

Ive thought of using the RB tstat delete plate to either blank the feed holes to and from a cooler, or looping the feeds with a short length of hose.

Would this work? Itd be easier to fit than a new housing and will work out cheaper than buying a used housing from abroad and having it shipped to the UK.

Pretty sure I still have an oil coolerless housing I could sell you. I’m in the US though. So, no clue off hand what to estimate for shipping.

Thanks for the offer mate but I already found one on the forum for sale (also from the US).

I was just thinking it would look better, be easier to fit, easier to swap back if I choose to and would roughly work out the same financially if I went for the RB plate.

It's winter time, maybe they don't drive long enough for the oil cooler to make a difference. To me it would seem like a thermostat adjustment would be more appropriate than deleting it entirely unless it's leaks that are becoming an issue or something like that

Curiosity get the better of you ha? The car is a dedicated drag car that I keep road legal (which is a bit of a mare as the UK is quite strict). At the end of this year I began seriously ripping the car apart as I want to lose as much weight as possible.

I live in Scotland so it isnt that hot temp wise, its trailered to and from the track and I doubt the cooler does a lot in a queue of cars waiting for a 1/4 mile pass with no air flowing through it.

I liked the idea of the RB plate because the housing doesnt need to be removed.
If it transpires it was a bad move I can either refit the stock stat housing or keep the plate and fit a smaller cooler in a better position.

Thanks for the offers of finding me a coolerless housing guys its really appreciated. I have already sourced one but would rather the RB plate as it gives me less of a headache to fit and more flexibility regarding cooler options if I decide I need one.

I think im just going to loop the in and out ports on the plate. I dont know how the oil flows through the housing so would rather not blank them, this way the oil will still be flowing in the usual way but essentially by passing the cooler in theory.

All cool, i can get that right now and ship it today if you wanted it.

By the time you get the plate and fittings and postage it will work out the same or more

Water already flows through the housing to heat up the oil quicker directly out of the head through the housing and into the top radiator hose, that heat exchanger picks up water from the coldest part of the radiator to help cool the oil and stabilize oil temps.

As this is a drag car he is building and temps are always cold where he is, having a heat exchanger will increase the heat up time.

There is very little heat exchange between the oil and water in stock form.
While water heats up much quicker than oil, the heat exchanger pickup isnt directly from the radiator, pickup is from the outlet of the pump. Which spins at reduced speed during warmup. Also the thermostat bypasses some of the coolant out the radiator during warmup.

The water from the pump is the coolest water in the system as it picks it up from the bottom of the radiator, if you have a look at the internal passages it heats the whole oil housing up to a point.

I run one of these on my race car and have the oil up to temp in 5 minutes

Then pump picks up water from the thermostat not directly from the bottom of the rad. i get faster oil warmup time than i did with the oil cooler back then.

Just trying to help the dude, what are you trying to do ? Help the dude or sell him some stuff ?

where do you think the thermostat gets its water from ?

Was trying to help the guy out with a cheap housing, go find one cheaper sent to the uk.

Housing is no longer available its been sold.

Well the Tstat can get its water from multiple place, otherwise it would be useless as we have an electrical pump that can be slowed a lot.
From the radiator during normal operation, or from the expension tank + heater core during warmup.

The thermostat gets its water from one source the radiator, pump controls the speed and the thermostat only controls the flow of where the chilled water is going by either the dme sending power to the heating element inside the thermostat core to let it open earlier if the dme is programmed to or when the water temp exceeds it's preset opening temp

When the thermostat is closed it just recirculates the water in the system but the heat exchanger is hooked up to the cooling side if i remember right, the whole system didn't work right and BMW scrapped it in favour of external cooling

Na thermostat can get its water from the tank,from the heater core, and ofc from the rad, but let's agree to disagree.
And this particular system is used on N55 newer than our N54, so no bmw didn't scrap it.
The new B58TU uses a oil2water exchanger, a way bigger one tho...
