Topic: Considering Reinstalling an Oil Thermostat – Worth It?
N54 Oil Temp Management – With or Without a Thermostat?
Hey everyone,
So all of my friends and acquaintances running N54s have oil filter housings with thermostats installed.
Last summer, I got tired of constantly fighting high oil temps—especially how stubborn the temps were about coming down. So I went with a plate-off block and have been running the oil cooler fully open ever since. It definitely helped keep things under control.
But recently, I’ve noticed that almost everyone I know has gone back to using a thermostat setup, and I’m still the only one running without one.
That got me thinking... should I reinstall a thermostat?
If I do, I’m planning to go with the Moselmann oil thermostat—the one that opens around 85°C.
What I’m wondering is:
Is there a noticeable difference between running the cooler fully open versus having a thermostat that opens at 85°C?
From a performance or engine longevity standpoint, what are you guys seeing?
Would love to hear your thoughts and experiences. Appreciate it in advance!
P.S.
Currently running a 550whp setup.
It’s a Stage 2.5ver build with a Walbro low-pressure fuel pump, Vargas FRB+ turbos, and a Precision Race DI methanol injection kit (photo attached).
