Looks like M57 had the CP3 HPFP and the N57 got the CP4 ... and those are known to fail as well on other diesel platforms, including the 6.7L Powerstroke. This is worth reading.

Unlike the gas motors, the N57 is a fuel recirculation setup, so when the HPFP fails (and it is a metal particulate failure) it takes out the complete fuel system from stem to stern.

We don't have enough N57s in the USA to see a solution developed, I suspect. I sure hope the Europeans do something.

We had a training about cp4 pumps.
They are a total headache.

Everytime you change the filter, you need to put it on a special " fitler change safe mode "
Basically it locks somekinda sensor, and it will not release the pressure from the hpfp.
If the pressue is released inside the pump, a needle wich is originally sideways with the shaft, turns clockwise and starts producing metal particulets.
And it makes the engine run mby for 500-1000km

And there isn't a solution.
New pump with new injectors, sadly

It's a recirculating fuel system, unlike the modern BMW gas motors. It's actually the complete fuel system that one has to replace when this happens - from tank to injectors, all inclusive.
