Tapping in to the CIC unit and adding a video aux. is a fairly easy process. I'm tired of looking for a better place to mount the second phone I use for MHD and would like to just mirror it to my CIC screen. The question I have is does anyone know how I would be able to access that signal once it is connected? All the coding I have seen for the aux. video input are reverse camera engagement.
Yes I know I can pay for some gadgets from vendors.

You might just have to tune in reverse!

But seriously, I have the same question but for CCC. I'd like to hook up a raspberry pi or something to my car.

Funny but the CCC has an oem module that can be added that would resolve my issue. Overpriced but still interesting that they offered it. BMW "Accessory module"

Actually brain fart. I have cic also and I bought a module off ebay called xcarlink for like 200 gbp which does backup cam and av in. I'll make a thread when I put it together.

i thought its possible to use hdmi input on cic?

i bought a raspberry pi 3 and a touchscreen 7" monitor and tried out a few media center os for it but support is sketchy and things dont really work all that well....

its not something i would want to use in a car at least

as for screen mirroring.. you might be able to get away with screen casting through android and a chrome hdmi stick hooked up to the hdmi port

i guess it depends on youe expectations...

i have all the hardware to do it
raspberry pi.. canbus hardware...monitors.... and so on

but from my experience... the integration of everything simply doesnt meet my expectations

for example, the screen used in the video has a very low refresh rate of ~5fps... even with a hacked driver, its around 10fps and it doesnt work with any of the media center os variants

canbus hardware integration to a media center os variant requires kernel recompilation with non existent documentation... i managed to get the kernel side to work after a few days of trial... got some testing data by running the canbus scripts but if i want to implement it into the interface i will need to make a plugin and trigger the.scripts in the background

not worth the effort imo

Have you not seen the one done by @Dreyo27 using the xcarlink? If you've got a few hundred bucks to blow, in my opinion its the best one. I'm going to do the same thing but with a faster android box and possibly an hdmi converter so I could swap in a computer stick or something similar if I wanted to.

yea i saw the vid... xcarlink is only half of the equation, you get video on your screen but you still need a way to control it efficiently
i think i have seen most of the implementations online but... i dont really like it so worst case i might just clamp a tablet somewhere, hook a usb hub, hide it and done.

but then, i dont have cic.

You can use a remote, but that isn't nearly as good as a touch screen. Maybe there can be a mod for the idrive glass. Then again, that glass is angled for good reason to block reflections... I think I'll live with a remote bluetooth touch pad.

Here you go Double

Guy is running a pie. Look at the right corner, it's being run thru CIC

I've figured out how to do this, no video module needed. Will work on it this week and post a diy.

I'm very interested! Although I need a module for backup camera anyway, so I may have to stick with the xcarlink I've already purchased. I still think if there was another solution that it would be valuable information.

Coding part done. Took about 5 min. Add $601 in VO, change a couple lines in CIC coding and boom another video input. Will update as I mess with it more.

That is dope how are you getting the signal in? What input?

Trying to think of the best way to do it but a bunch of options.

I think I'll ninja swap my usb / aux in arm rest to USB / aux+video so it looks as oem as possible. Then can just stream video from MHD phone to some $20 streaming stick (Firestick, Roku, whatever). Has to be wireless video unless you have an android device with multiple inputs.
The video input goes in to FBAS1 pin out in CIC but can code it to FBAS2/3 if preferred.

Not sure if it makes sense but once done tinkering I'll put up a DIY for this forum.

Sounds good.. I'd definitely be interested but I want backup camera as well so I have to use the xcarlink anyway.

The Xcarlink allows the car to behave the way BMW designed it to when equipped with back up cam. This is just a plain jane video input. If you hooked a splitter up you could view the back up camera picture thru that input on the highway if you wanted but using this as a camera back up would be tedious since you'd have to manually switch to it in the cic. Not really a one or the other type thing, both could be utilized and are coded differently.

I think it would be awesome to get some gauges up on the iDrive screen.

I've got this all done, so here is how it breaks down

ANY composite video input can be displayed via your idrive using a new unlocked menu

You'll need a few of these part #61131383776

Add $601 to your VO in CAS+NFRM

Code CIC
TVM_VARIANTEN
vm_l4_most_fkat

Change TV = wert_21

Use the part number I gave and add one to both the yellow composite (video) ground and +

Pop your CIC out and place the two new pins in bottom row of quad connector. + goes to 18 and - goes to 27

Will post a nice clear DIY if Amazon ever gets their shit together and delivers my mini pc to the right house.

I also have my OBD cable routed behind the cover, so you don't see shit, it starts up and turns off with the car so gauges from MHD available thru a couple limp wristed spins of controller
