Hi to all.
I'm owner of a used 2009 e91, it has cic equipped by factory, but is an old version one telnet only and don't allow for usb update.
At the moment I have 2008-2 premium maps , first owner of this car was not a tech guy and did not care about it.
I wish to update to latest maps but 3xdvd are 2020-2, and more recent updates are only through usb drives.
I've been at dealer to ask for update the cic, but he told me he will not update because is a dangerous operation (unit in footwell could be bricked, it happened on a car last week he said).

He told me that eventually replacing the bricked unit will cost me about 500 euros.

Before landing to this forum I've buit an enet cable to access the cic and I was hoping to ftp it but I discovered it only allows me to telnet.
While telnetting the cic I saw that if I insert a map dvd it creates a symlink folder "/src" into root pointed to "/fs/cd0" and I thought to modify symlink to point "/fs/usb0" which is my thumbdrive in glove box.
Obviously replacing the simlink with ln -s (or -sf) did not work, as filesystem is read only.
Reading through some forum I've seen is possible to rw mount filesystem using :
"mnt_hd.sh -w" or "mount -o remount rw /mnt/efs_ro/" (this one to make flash rw) or "mount -uw /mnt/xxx" .
I didn't tested first statement, I've tried second and third ones using / as path , or trying to remount /fs/cd0 as rw but no joy, I wasn't able to modify symlink.
I'd like to find a safe way to replace symlink "/src" or it's content only to start a regular map update via usb thumbdrive without have to risk my cic or any other unit inside my car.
I'm not experienced in qnx but a litlle bit experienced in some linux distro, and any hint or help is really apprecciated.

Thank you for any help you could give me and forgive my not excellent english.

Regards J.

New approach , I've tryied to mount directly usb thumbdrive to /fs/cd0 using "mount -tcd /dev/umass/usb100t12 /fs/cd0" but it failed with reason input/output error.
I've used also "mount -tqnx6 /dev/umass/usb100t12 /fs/cd0" this time error was "corrupted filesystem detected".:triumph::triumph:

Other try other failure. I've managed to get 2020-2 x3dvd maps, burned onto 3x verbatim 8.5g+r dvds .
Cic has started the update, it accepted my code, after about an hour at 29.9 - 30 % updating ( disk 1 of 3 on the display)
it stopped with reason : dvd is unreadable. I think it was near to first disk swap .
I've burned my disk with imgburn - burn folders and files - File System(s): ISO9660, UDF (1.02) dvd+r.
I've burned another disk1 but same as above. My cic looks like possessed...
It looks that new code is persistent, I was prompted for it only on my first update try, on next update it started copying files directly.
Can I eventually drop files from thumbdrive to hd pkgdb folder (as who want update script activated cics) and expect new map begins to work?

Help is very welcome

Regards J.

Updating CIC firmware does not help to usb map update? My e89 is build 3/2009 and I have intalled latest cic firmware with ista/p. Usb maps works fine.

Thank you very much for your answer, I've been at my dealer to update cic firmware before starting this thread.
Maybe as my car is second hand one, he didn't tryied to install new firmware saying it is also a dangerous operation as he can brick frm
and prospecting me an high cost operation.
I'm not able to update by myself , I haven't any icom interface or similar, also I have not skills to do it by myself.
Yesterday I was able to update from 2008-2 to 2020-2 , dropping directly files into cic pkgdb folder from thumbdrive and executing again update via dvd.
The cic skipped existing files imediatly and performed a reboot.
Copying files took almost same time as reading from dvd , but at least it worked!
I will burn a new disk1 with a part of 2022-1 files and I'll try to update again this way.

Today I experimented a long copy session to try to update to premium 2022-1 .
After copying al the files I inserted my modifyied dvd and at reboot... nothing! :grimacing:
The only map files present on the hd where the ones I have burnt on my dvd, looks like I need acios_db.ini as retrofitted cic.

Hi, You just need to found a person who have Icom and just update CIC FW, and I would recommend FRM FW too. This will solve usb problem and add new functions.

Yesterday I was reading at my /etc/mcd.conf file, and I found there was a particular path monitored for maps update.
It is /mnt/hbnavi/update/ . I can update maps but, I suppose I have a problem with my generated lifetime fsc, after reboot navi stays on loading.
It happens with both 2021-1 and 2022-1, if I reload 2020-2 via dvd it's working again.
Old cic can update maps via usb, but it is not simple as inserting usb thumbdrive in glovebox, I think it was used during tests to load maps
without spending 2.5 hours per update.
1) Insert thumb drive with maps in glovebox
2) login via telnet (my is old password one) with enet cable
3) check for /fs/usb0 existence
4) unmount /fs/usb0
5) check for /dev/umass/usb100t32 ( this is how is named in my car , on yours may be different)
5) remount it as /mnt/hbnavi/update/ path.
Cic prompts for update, executes it and asks for reboot. at this point I'm again stuck ... :disrelieved:
Maybe ,as I think , I have problem with my fsc or maybe permission on files.

I'll really apprecciate if someone can access cic via telnet and send me a listing via ls -al, just to compare permissions and structure.
Best regards

Why are you complicating all? Just update your cic, the you can generate proper FSC and update via USB simple. There are nothing complicated.

You could update your FRM module first, with last firmware it will not fall anymore. Then you could update your CIC. It's strange that a dealer doesn't know it.

PRoxxx thank you for your answer and your tip. I think it is because it was first time I've been there and he was trying to make me a high price,
frankly I don't know why he told me that. But he scared me a lot saying" if frm fails it is not in warranty coverage and it will take 500 euros only for the unit."
Once car is there , with a fault , they laugh and you cry....
I'm not trusting him anymore so I'll take a trip to another dealer when possible, the only problem is distance.. it is about 120kms from here.
Unfortunately , I have only a good kd-can cable and not a better interface to try update by myself, that's why I was trying to solve it on my own.

Best regards

Hi, If dealer have normal external PSU( I gues should be), FRM will not fail. But its recommended to update. It takes not more than 15mins. And even if it fails, resurrection of FRM costs 40Eur( at me ) :D.
From were you are? Maybe I have some contacts, who can help with these updates. Or maybe you are ready to buy some equipment?

Hi Digital, I'm from southern Italy I live in Calabria the point of the boot near Sicily island. I'm building my PSU from a server psu but It will take long to have a good interface as icom as at the moment I'm unemployed.
I think I's more easy to me to find a trusted dealer at the moment.

Well I think you're right... I think they will charge me at least 200 / 250 € .
At that price it's a nice option good also for future jobs! I suppose I need full kit no wifi wich is about 280€ .
If this works well ( I've heard people having problems with some clones) it's the way to go!
