Hi, I am thinking on getting 335is with 7DCT (GS7D36SG), but I was wondering is it really faster than 6AT (ZF6HP21)?

  • Lets say if you are driving regularly in 4th gear (I assume DCT will prepare next higher gear?) and then you floor it, so it would need to lower instead of increasing gear, would 6AT (ZF6HP21) react faster in such case?
  • Lets say if you are cruising in 7th gear low RPM and then you floor it, so it would need to lower more than one gear, would 6AT (ZF6HP21) react faster in such case?

Is DCT only faster if you drive 0-60, but not when you suddenly decide to overtake and kickdown is needed?

You’re likely to get a lot of fanboys here for both. My best suggestion is to drive both and test the scenarios that you value

My opinion and I’m a DCT fanboy…

A DCT is much faster, more advanced and more fun. It’s also more costly. A 335is is a different car to a standard 335 also

I mostly value the need to shift without lag when overtaking.

Much faster to shift in any scenarios? Or only in drag race scenario "0-280"?
What about downshift/kickdown when overtaking scenarios?

It depends on the mode the gearbox is in ...
couple of scenarios
Drop one gear in manual mode is instant.. pull the paddle and its there with the M3 GTS tune its completed in 90ms.

In drive mode there is a small delay.

In sequential mode its already in the right gear(youll need a tune for this)
In all cases i believe its faster than the AT except one....
Dropping two gears takes twice as long as dropping one as you have to dissengage and re-engage the same clutch
Dropping three gears is very fast

Drive them both and youll see for yourself. Be concious of the fact that a tune will help get the best of both of them
