Ported head results, that is!

20220212_114556.jpg

I was on a travel nursing assignment last year in which I didn't need my car to get around (thank you Boston!) so I decided to treat myself while I had the chance. I contacted Dave at Headgames and briefly discussed about my goals for the car. He suggested their pocket port services for my goals and I decided to get their Ferrea valvetrain as they were already in there. Tiffani at Headgames communicated with me via email every step of the way and kept me informed about the whole process. It took them about a month to finish my head.

Eurowerks Automotive in Pompano Beach did all of the work and they suggested to use headstuds as the headbolts will most likely stretch based on my power goals. The problem was, ARP headstuds was on national backorder (possibly even to this day) and thus my car was down longer than I expected. Thanks to @Jern54 for posting about proseries headstuds from Germany which took only one week for delivery. After the headstuds arrived, my car was good to go, but I definitely needed a retune thanks to the head.

While I was gone, I had left my car on 93 octane as I knew it was going to be sitting for quite some time and didn't want any issues associated with E85. Unfortunately for me, my tuner is now a doctor and a father, so that leaves him basically no time to further tinker with my car, but with what he left me, I think it runs amazing for pump gas and wanted to share my results with the community.

Here is a datalog of my car: https://datazap.me/u/rnmevo9/jh-head-v1?log=0&data=3-21

2007 N54 133k miles
Headgames pocket port with Ferrea valvetrain (stock cams)
RB GF 17t with RB outlets
BMS inlets
VRSF 335d charge pipe with turbosmart raceport bov
VRSF full street exhaust with vibrant resonator
PSP 900ic FMIC and oil cooler with thermostat
PFS Walbro bucket 295 pump
Precision Raceworks fuel regulator assembly with upgraded 8an fuel line
Helix overdrive with their micron filter unit
EOS BMP4 EKP
Tuned by @V8bait

I figured some pump gas people needed some love, so here you go. I am going to pick up some items from PFS and then seek another tuner to tune it on E85 as it is literally everywhere around me. The car drives amazing for pump gas and is much faster than when I had stock turbos running e85. I'll update this thread once I start running it on E85 and maybe some aftermarket camshafts.

Thanks for looking!

Great post! By chance do you have dyno numbers before the port? Or is the green line before porting.
Edit: love the 328 badges.

Great gains throughout the whole rev band. Have you thought about swapping to some Schricks and charting the difference there too?

I wanted to get a dyno run before sending out the head, but it just wasn't in the cards. All of those runs are with the ported head. I am currently making 500whp/450wtq on only 15psi. Every other car that I have seen with bigger twins and stock cylinder head need about 18-21psi to make the same power on 93 octane. I am certain the gains will be more pronounced once I start running it on E85.

And yes, I have been pondering about getting some schrick or cat camshafts later on and charting the differences.

Wow, looking good. Are those Ferrea valves larger than the stock valves? Wasn't sure if the gains were just from porting, or the porting and larger valves.

Ferrea valves are the same size as stock valves. Headgames says oversized valves aren't needed until you start making north of 1500whp.

That is awesome for only 15 PSI on pump 93.

Good post..for us Brits who run only pump gas good to know…not sure if it’s clear but how much BHP / torque is attributed to the porting?

Good BHP figures and torque curve is very flat but not as strong at its peak as I would have imagined ?

This is whp, not bhp figures. The head is meant for 600-800whp, which is what I will be making once I switch over to e85. The benefits of this head is clearly visible as I am not running as much boost as other upgraded twin turbo setups on pump gas to make 500whp.

How did the engine characteristic change in general with the ported head?
Like during daily drive in partial throttle, spool behaviour.. etc.
Does the car now feels stronger in every situation or did it get a little tired somewhere? (Head porting is supposed to shift the power band to the right but i am wondering how this applies on our cars)

The engine is much more peppier now than before even though I am running less boost (I was running 18psi on pump 93 on the stock head compared to 15psi now with the headgames head). It spools the turbos much faster and I did not notice any loss anywhere in the powerband. The most noticeable difference is that the power keeps climbing all the way to redline (even with stock cams) and that I now hit full boost around 3200 rpms compared to 3500rpms with the stock head.

What was your WGDC level before the porting?

A dutycycle of 45% at 15psi in your log is a lot (for 15psi with GFs) and i bet you were at similar levels with 18psi and just would prove how much more air is pushed through the engine.

All of the logs I took before the porting were on e85 as that was what I always ran on a daily basis. I have it on 93 octane now because I knew the car was going to be sitting for quite some time during the porting process and my tuner is no longer tuning as he has more important responsibilities.

Anyways, here is a log of when I had it on e85 and stock head: https://datazap.me/u/rnmevo9/rev-3?log=0&data=3-22

I only used the 18psi (stock head) pump gas base map for 1 day out of the whole year as I was in an area without e85. I never got around to logging that 93 octane base map as I am a e85 addict lol.

Are you running PI or Overdrive ?

Sad that he retired.

I love how the head port job in this thread shows what a huge improvement it is while marty is sitting in his cave saying it is not worth it :tearsofjoy:
Maybe who did Marty’s head just didn’t do a good job. But regardless let’s not make this a toxic thread, no need to name call.
