Here is one of the things I love about this board, is the number of ways you can punish your trouble making users.

  1. Cause pages to load slowly
  2. Chance of getting a blank page
  3. Chance of being redirected to a random page, like a gay porn site
  4. etc
Here is what the settings page looks like:

I'd like to see a most irritable poster point system, you know who you are and that come on here just to get a rise out of someone.

Make it anonymous and if they score enough points they take a timeout for a few weeks.

It really makes it frustrating to try and develop anything for this platform. Legions of armchair engineers come out of the woodwork to shit all over anything new.

It already exists. If you click the drop down next to someone's name you can see their reputation. If they have a bad one their comment is hidden and I can make it so they can't post or whatever I choose.

Edit: okay that was fake news. I guess the latest updates have removed that colored bar. It's not too hard to implement all sorts of punishment, a discouragement feature already exists. I can cause a blank page to load randomly just to annoy them.

This is mostly an issue of attitude, honestly - keyboard attitude that would likely never show up in face-to-face discussion as a group.

This is priceless. So your strategy is to randomly annoy the annoying? The idea is both bankrupt and brilliant lol.

Make it so that below certain rep enough people need to approve the post before it shows for non members or without being hidden originally lmao

We agree on one thing something has to be done about these annoying keyboard warriors as they wouldn't do it in real life or they get a smack in the mouth for good measure.

Moved some posts into an older thread on the same subject.

There are actions that can be applied to users who meet a certain 'user criteria'. This criteria can be reputation based and the result can be something directly applied to the user or the user can be moved temporarily to a different user group(with less privileges etc).

There are a LOT of possibilities. The thing is, the more you tweak, the more you have to check each time there is an update and anything to do with permissions, particularly those which are custom modifications which meddle with the default behavior, these tend to break right away when there is an update and this requires down time for that feature. For example we've had some user blocking stuff that hasn't worked in years and when it did, it didn't always work with all aspects of the site because we have many customization here. There are so many things to test its unmanageable for a single person to go through it all. So what I can do is implement some existing features like the one in this thread. Sometimes the perfect solution isn't one of the options however.

I vote make the rep system 'work'. Have the rep bar be shown under their picture avatar so people know if they are dealing with a troll who get's negatively repped often. That would be the easiest I would guess. It also gives you an idea if you are taking the advice of an idiot who the community as identified via the rep system. If you see someone often get's neg reps you know to take their comment or suggestion with a grain of salt.

A more advanced system would be once someone gets neg repped X number of times in Y amount of time they are not allowed to post for a certain said amount of time, be it 12 hours or a week. This would basically be a 'time out' if the community decides it does not like to hear from an individual. I think a self regulating 'rep system' that allows the forum community to police it's users would make the most sense.

I would also suggest limiting the amount of neg votes a person is allowed to give in a set period of time. This would stop a troll from going through and making everyone of your posts as negative which would artificially inflate your neg rep. It is important the rep system is not abused for it work function correctly.

I would suggest all vendors to be on the same level so if they are shit posting the community can neg rep them and get them out of a thread. Maybe you aren't going to give a vendor a time out but they could at least be removed from posting in a thread by the community. Again letting the forum self police itself so moderators are not required. I would also suggest that vendors should not allowed to rep pos or neg. This would prevent vendor fan boys from just repping because their 'preferred vendor' pos or neg repped something so they should rep it the same way. It also adds a level of professionalism to the vendor being above a pos or neg reputation system by not being allowed to use it, but being allowed to be controlled by it.

Having an anonymous system I think would be a serious step back. Having your name tied to a like or dislike makes you actually have to think about your action. Otherwise someone could just anonymously 'rep' every post you have ever made or every time you post regardless of the quality of content of the post. An anonymous system would also allow people to 'gang up' against an individual but do it anonymously. I think the whole point of the way the rep system currently works is you can see EXACTLY how someone else repp'd a post.

This has been tried on another forum and can be easily abused by getting your mates to neg rep for you, the best way is to leave it up to the admins if they get enough strikes

I would assume the system would alert the admin that a 'time out' had been given. The admin could then review the 'case' if they so cared and undo it. As it should be a very rare occurrence I doubt it would happen often.

If I called up a mate to sign up and rep a post on a forum I think they would just laugh at me and I would be forever embarrassed. But I get your point, some people take the internet too seriously and that fake online rep means something. At least you can see who neg reps and it's easy to see if there is a pattern of the same people doing it over and over abusing the system. I have not seen that so far on this forum.

Either way, I think a more functioning rep system would be an improvement. I think it's hilarious the user discouragement has been pre programmed in.
