Hey guys, Dave from Ambient Thermal Management here. I am one of the new owners of ATM and just wanted to share some of the technical information of our F30 FMIC with you. ATM has been dormant so it's been a while since our data has been posted. Here's some of the details:
SIZE- We've measured the available area in front of the bumper in both depth and height and custom designed an intercooler that makes the most of this space - the result is an intercooler with 67% more frontal area and 59% more core volume than stock.
CORE- ATM is the only FMIC manufacturer producing a stepped core as one single assembly. Our core is custom made to our specifications, including the ambient and charge row height and internal and external fin count. And of course, at the heart of every ATM intercooler core is our unique rounded header bars which act as a velocity stack for the charge rows, increasing the flow efficiency from 80% to 94%.
PLUMBING- ATM opted to utilize the factory plumbing on this application. The reasoning is simple; Unlike the previous generation E90 series' restrictive charge pipes, the new F30 series charge pipes are more than adequate and provide no restriction to flow.
ENDTANK DESIGN- All endtanks are not created equal. Air likes to flow in a smooth curved radius just like you see on the rounded cast endtanks of the ATM FMIC.
The end result is the ATM FMIC's ability to remove more temperature, meet the targeted air flow, and minimize pressure drop in your BMW.
And as you can see, we're now offering additional finish options! Black or silver powdercoat.
Now for the good stuff, here's the data showing the high efficiency of our unique FMIC core:
Test 1 - The data log below is a comparison between the stock F30 intercooler vs. the ATM intercooler. The scenario was set to log charge air temperatures and pressure before and after the intercoolers for three back to back third gear pulls. Ambient temperatures were 55°F during the stock intercooler test and 53°F during the ATM intercooler test.
Chart Legend:
The red line indicates the charge temperature before the intercooler.
The blue line indicates the charge temperature after the intercooler.
The black line is charge pressure before the intercooler.
The green line is charge pressure after the intercooler.
Results: Pressure (Delta P) pre vs. post intercooler are near identical between the two intercoolers, ranging between .05-.15 psi.
Temperature (Delta T) pre vs. post intercooler are very different.
The pre-intercooler temperature was 224°F for both intercoolers. The peak post stock intercooler temperature was 48.7°F above the 55°F ambient temperature @ 103.7°F resulting in 71% efficient.
The peak post ATM intercooler temperature was 15.3°F over the 53°F ambient @ 68.3°F resulting in a 91% efficiency!
Test 2- The next data log below is a comparison between the F30 stock intercooler vs. the ATM intercooler. In this scenario we tested the intercoolers in a standing start to top of 4th gear pull.
Results: Again the Pressure (Delta P) pre vs. post intercooler are near identical between the two intercoolers.
Again Temperature (Delta T) pre vs. post intercooler are very different.
The pre-intercooler temperature was 223.8°F for the stock intercooler. The peak post stock intercooler temperature was 45.2°F above the 55°F ambient temperature @ 100.2°F resulting in 72% efficient.
The pre intercooler temperature was 222.3°F for the ATM intercooler. The peak post ATM intercooler temperature was 8.9°F over the 53°F ambient @ 61.9°F resulting in a 94% efficiency!
