Takata Recall - Who's Gotten Notification From BMW?

So I remember hearing about the Takata airbag issue about winter of 2016 for BMW's specifically in the news. Then I got notification of the airbag issue from BMW and that they were going to do a recall, just later. I was expecting a long wait for the notification of recall from BMW because so many vehicles were involved, but the wait went on so long that I actually forgot. I never received an official letter or e-mail telling me to take my car in. I've also been to a Spring Checkup event at a BMW dealership, and they never even mentioned the recall or that I was eligible. I've actually received a notification from a Settlement group warning me to take my car in and service it before any notification from BMW that they were ready to do recalls.

Anyone else not receive notifications or was I just the lucky one?

Just called my local service center. Obviously I'm eligible, but they have not sent out an official notification for me. Since it's stated that BMW is doing recalls by "owners of the highest risk registered vehicles, i.e., oldest models in highest absolute humidity areas", I asked the rep. roughly what year models he has seen issued notifications and he couldn't give me an answer. He said he's seen anywhere from 2002 models to 2013 models being called in

If replacement airbags were available, I'd take the 500 bones, depending on the price of the bag.

I got a letter for my 2002 x5. I haven't gone in yet.
A letter specifically from BMW? I'm not surprised since your x5 is a 2002, but I just want to make sure BMW sent it and not a settlement group

For clarification purposes, who did you call? BMW or a settlement group? I don't see BMW cutting you a check and letting you do it with a 3rd party shop versus them doing it with them. But I could be wrong

What that's interesting that BMW would offer money to get it done somewhere else. Maybe they just don't have enough parts and want to get this over with as soon as possible? Keep us informed as to what your service advisor says though! Do a little homework before you go in like checking the price of aftermarket airbags and such

So you guys understand the amount of vehicles affected is of massive proportion! I think you all get that part lol

Anyways we wanna do them but we don't have parts available yet.. They kinda go down a list of bins and do them in waves.. They also have special ones that your technical engineer can release for you if you need one for a repair, irate client or body shop..

Recalls involves lots and lots of red tape!! As well as timing and punishment if you don't meet the replacement time when notified ect.. So they wait till the last second I think when they know they can get you in.

Lots of law involved here guys that's all

I actually didn't even read it. I got two letters, one a few months ago it seems like, and another one the other day. It was different and likely similar to those which you received.

Thanks for the insider info @Bmwfixerguy1! Yeah of course this is a vast amount of vehicles needed for repair, even if you didn't include the 18 other manufacturers that have to fix their own airbags as well. However, in my opinion this isn't a recall on a minor defective part. The fact that getting into an accident is NOT entirely your responsibility and someone else can end your life because the safety equipment designed to save you actually shears open your jugular or makes you blind with shrapnel flying in your eye makes me paranoid like none other. Especially since this problem has been known for over a year and yet not even a single email or letter (other than the initial notice like a year ago) about the progress. I have to go to other auto news outlets for information, and then I see even more troubling news like BMW possibly getting into another law suit about knowingly installing Takata airbags on newer model cars. I know this is all on the corporate side of things, but we just want to be safe lol

Already had the bag swapped through the dealership. Friend used to be a service advisor so it helped getting my car in there quicker.

Got mines replaced last week after a year of bullshitting that it wasn’t in stock. Took them all of 20 minutes to change out.

If I still haven't gotten mine serviced yet is there any way to still get the money for the recall?

Guess I'll have to try to call the dealer as well. I've only gotten a settlement letter from what appears to be a third party. Almost seemed like junk mail and was about to go in the trash. Gonna have to clarify all this.

Received my letter in May, left it to die on the desk. Just came across it this past weekend. Called my local BMW on Monday and the car was taken in for the service on Thursday. I guess it really depends on your dealer as mine was only a 3 day turn around. Parts were not in stock and had to be ordered.
