Swap discussion

As a future project, I'm interested in performing an engine swap. I know there are three different N54 models, the 225kW and 240kW N54B30 models and the 250kW N54B30TO model. Could the 250kW "TO" fit relatively well where a 225kW N54B30 is meant to go? Or are there some pretty big changes in dimensions?

This project wouldn't be done out of practicality, it would be done because why the hell not try and do it our own way.

There couldn't be big dimensional changes as an N54 is an N54, its a 3.0L motor at the end of the day. I'd say there are differences in engine mounts and maybe a slight variance in some of the things you attach to the long block but that's about all I can say.

I don't think there is a difference. Isn't the TO just the 335is engine?

Not that it's the most reliable source, but according to wiki, the TO is found in 740i and Z4 models starting in 2011

I could try to track down a 335is manual later today though and see what it says.

It's possible there are some other differences but i don't think it would impact fitment for a swap.

The N54 is the N54. For swapping concerns, talking just the motor itself, I don't see any of them being any different in dimension from each other.

Now that I gave this more thought, the only difference I could see are the motor/trans mounts.

Screw it just swap a s65, I wanted to do it on mine just it would take a long time and decided to go single turbo instead. I've only read about one e9x doing it.

Yeah if I swapped, I'd put in an S85/N63/S63 or something.

I've actually had an s63 in my e91 for about a week until it spun a bearing with 50kms. Long and depressing story...

Tomorrow were staring a build for a customer with an early 06 e87 5 door hatch -> s65 6mt, brakes, suspension, rear end and possibly cic, comfort access, combox and individual audio.

Our intent is to have every feature and system working fault free in a 100% oem manner. It's especially difficult as being early 06 it's a jb1 and cas 2.

They are all the exact same motor in different states of tune. Depending on which chassis the motor came out of some accessories might be in different places but the long block is exactly the same.
