Yeah, RHD certainly doesn’t help things! I saw that you mentioned the top mount kit somewhere else. I’ll keep an eye out as there are a handful of RHD N54 top mounts about, but bottom mount is preferable. I’ll probably end up with a TTE550, but the Chinese cast standard placement ones intrigue me (Kinugawa/SteamSpeed/Vargas). The N54 guys seem to have a good time with the ‘China turbos’, there’s not much information on the N55 ones though.

Yeah! I’ll start a thread on here when things get moving on the build properly. I’ve got the E87, I’m still buying parts as I’ll do most of the upgrades at once. Or at least that’s the plan!

I hope you go for it! An EFR in an X1 would be awesome!
Great, i'm excited to see that thread! I've only read good things about the TTE550, for both n54 and n55, should be a good choice!

Nothing fits the 5 series. there's a AC line in the way. Also, a motor mount right where the turbo would normally sit in a bottom mount setup. As for the X1 from what i know its identical to the 1 series. Their shouldn't be an issue, but a smart thing to do would be to get under there and look for differences between a 335xi and a x1 xdrive.
Yeah, you're right about looking, but I don't have an e90/e82 to compare to🤷‍♂️

That's a good thought regarding the ac, I just did some digging and think i'm in luck. ALL of the parts in the following diagrams cross reference to e90🍻

If you need any photos, I’m happy to provide some. I should be changing my driveshaft soon before the E87 swap (to do some tests for the company who make it), so I can take a load of photos of the turbo area whilst I’m under there if you do need any.

Thanks! If you're going to be under there anyway and don't mind, sure! Don't go out of your way though, just if it's convenient. Any rough idea of when you'll be under there? No rush, just curious about timing. Though with everything that's been verified through realoem, I'm guessing everything should be good to go.

I'll get you some tomorrow, anything specific?
I guess the clearance area between the engine and frame rail where the turbo goes, area of turbo to intercooler piping and then downpipe area? I haven't swapped a turbo before, so anything else you see that may be relevant.

I'm specifically concerned about the engine to frame rail clearance, as the turbo outlet pipe on this kit is 4 ply silicone, and it looks pretty tight between the frame rail and manifild. I've seen some guys have burnt a hole through when it accidentally touched the manifold. But it also seems to rub against the frame rail. I'm not crazy about this, but not sure how concerned I should be.

Here's some pics from the interweb. Two different cars, both heat wrapped outlet pipes. I think the subframe may be dropped in at least 1 of the pics (taken during install), so not how accurate frame rail clearance is in these.

@KevinC39 How's it going? On your speedtech kit, did you have any issues with the turbo outlet tube clearing the frame rail and turbo manifold? You don't by chance have any pics of this area, do you? Any signs of wear, or heat damage to the outlet pipe?

Do you have to run water lines to the efr turbo?

I believe the kit will come with water and oil lines. Here's a pic:

Ok cool, you plan on upgrading the diverter valve in the compressor housing from the get go?
I'm not sure yet. I'm not crazy about the plastic one that comes with the turbo. I think that turbo fits a GTI model diverter valve, but not sure if that diverter valve has the same kind of electrical connector as the BMW diverter valve harness? I'm not 100%, but I think the kit is designed to connect the vacuum line for the exhaust flapper to the boost solenoid that comes on the EFR, and then connect that valve to the EFR diverter valve and BMW diverter valve harness to that valve so the DME can use that valve to control the the diverter valve?

I also saw you can get a billet cover to replace that plastic diverter valve cover on the EFR, but I haven't tracked down a part number or anything for that yet.

Yeah, no worries. I should be under there in about 4 weeks, if that timeframe works for you? I’m just being realistic with getting my parts together and what I’ve got on. I think you’re absolutely right though, you’ve got nothing to worry about if the kit fits the 335ix.

Here's some pics from the interweb.

I saw the thread with the first photo you posted in this post a few years ago and forgot about it to be honest, so thanks for reminding me! I went out and compared my engine bay to the photos in the thread this evening. There’s is no way the Speedtech EFR kit is fitting RHD cars! The hot side of the turbo is right where the lower section of the RHD steering rack would be. Oh well! Hybrid it is! I’ll keep my eye on the top mount setup though, probably more power than I need.

Regardless, your X1 will be awesome with an EFR @wheela!
