so now that the PR coils have been out for a little bit, and multiple people have them are they worth getting? Also what gap are you running with them and can you notice a difference?

I've seen a couple threads where the gap couldn't be opened up a lot more on high performance cars. For instance a .25-26 gap instead of a .22. But, the real gains from these systems is that you don't have to worry about MOSFET issues and, you get a lot more power to the spark plug which... In the past was non-existent really.

Personally, I'd love to get a set. I would love to play with the tuning side of things after I got them on my personal car so, I could really see what all gains could be made and what all limits could be reached.

I had to gap mine down to .023-.022 to get it to stop misfiring. It was a very slight misfire, didn't even throw a code, but I could feel it everytime I would go into boost. Had brand new 97506 plugs, index 12 injectors, PR coils, PS2 blah blah blah...I really am looking for some solid info on the r8 coils. Some people say they opened gap to .03 which is crazy, but I'd like to see it locally before making conclusions. lol

What coils are you running with it atm?

I was probably one of the 1st sets shipped. Plugs (97506) had 4-500 miles on them @ 0.22 so I just left them; installed coils & have been flawless @ 20psi e60-70.

Every time I see this it's usually an install issue like not fully engaging the plug wire or using dielectric grease. I'm at .031" and over 20psi, have put 8,000 miles on it. Although I tend to recommend .022-.026 for people as there's really no use on our cars to go bigger IMO. Below .018 isn't good like most use on factory.

You can calculate an estimate for your gap online at a few sites. The PR coils make 44kV, OEM make 34kV. At 900tq on these motors 10kV can be the difference between .018 and .022. Could the coil voltage be increased? Yes for bigger gaps. But at 900tq you want to span the gap and still have some energy left for spark duration, so there's a trade off. In the calculator, try to stay around 40kV so you have some headroom.

I have my PR set still sitting in the box unopened from two weeks ago. Since I no longer have a good local source of E85 I'm on 93 octane Shell V-Power. Current NGK 95570 are gapped to 0.022" and have 6,000 miles on them. I have new NGK 95570 (one-step colder) which I'm planning to gap to 0.031" to use with the PR coils. This is based on a recent posting by Justin(V8). I'm hoping to see performance gains. If not, you'll be seeing a for sale sign for the PR coils.

Performance gains with coils, yeah those are hard. Car definitely runs better for most people, and the idea behind these were coils optimized for low dwell but can handle upwards of 6ms dwell or high duty cycle without dying, so basically ready for the track. They were originally designed for racing boat motors after all and are adapted to our application.

I think you'll see performance increases in conditions where multispark has been hiding misfires on the initial spark, for reasons unrelated to damaged engines (seen that twice now, multispark hiding misfires with a low compression pot, coils bought to try to fix timing corrections that were regrettably unrelated, learned a lot along the way). Cars making lots of power, especially lots of torque, might see substantial power gains. And that's for any ignition upgrade not limiting this to the PR. If you already have good spark and good combustion I don't think you'll see much gain outside of smoothness and reliability.

Fuck you Justin. Your shit increases drivability, reliability, and makes the car smoother. But it didn't make more power so I'm going to sell them used for 75% of the price. Because I love misfires! And seeing my car on a flatbed!

Jesus Christ the internet needs an IQ prerequisite.

On second thought, you probably shouldn't sell him a set. He seems like the prime candidate for Okada Plasma coils. They're plasma. That's like good.

On an unrelated note, I've been running the PR coils for a few thousand miles now. Mainly bought them for the reliability factor, tired of carrying a hex bit and spare coils with me everywhere, on a fucking 42,000 mile car nonetheless. I didn't change the plugs, NGK something's or other with some gap I can't remember.

The car runs a whole lot smoother, and haven't had a single misfire since. Since adding a couple hundred whp, I feel the car is finally to the point where I can drive it, anywhere, never worrying about what's going to fail next. I've got a few vendors to credit that with, but PR is high on that list, right up there with MMP.

I'm going to order one of these smart coils, not for performance gain. But running full e85 with port injection, I'd like to prevent misfire as much as possible. Although it won't prevent misfire 100%, but it would help tremandously.

Man, is all of that really necessary? The guy just said he's going to try them and if he doesn't see a benefit he's going to sell them.

I'd like to believe the members here are not only intelligent, but pleasant.
