There are videos showing how Doug tried to pass off Garrett compressor maps as compressor maps of his own turbos. The guy is shady as hell and was run out of the VW/Audi community. Stay far away from this guy.

Considering that was 5 years ago and he came clean about the maps, I didn't think this would be a determining factor. I guess we will see once we get some info from the testers.

Welcome to the world of Frankenturbo folks. Literally, he wants you to post on FB where trolls have free reign over everything, but an "anonymous-user forums" are not the place for them. Let's just look at the facts, and you can make your decision based on that.

Timeline:

  • Doug announces his upgrades in early January 2016, yes that's two years ago
  • He posts a continuing stream of literal bullshit charts and graphs of things that have been done for years (including saying inlets do not help, then making his own, as well as running 25 degrees of timing) on the forums (yes the same place he is saying is not the place to post now) in hopes of duping some people with information overload
  • In two years time, he has promised multiple turbo options, including cast turbos, yet has produced I think one very suspect dynograph
  • The company that actually builds frakenturbos contacts us and we have an hour-long conversation with them on the phone. During this conversation they explain how Doug builds absolutely nothing, they build it all, how Doug is terrible to work with, words like (charlatan https://screenshots.firefox.com/TqOiaHEaT4iIv41V/www.google.com ) are thrown around, how he has brought them our products to them to be copied, the list could go on (Doug, be careful about disputing this, if you force my hand I will post the conversation in its entirety. I can assure you, you do not want this information public)
  • After the conversation, we tried to warn some people, many of them called us haters
  • Here we are in 2018 with still in "beta" with no results, and a bunch of claims, nothing else
With all the proven turbo options on the platform that meet, or beat his price point why would anyone bother to consider these as an option?

Was using windshield washer tank for meth injection. Known to cause fires on the n54.

Claimed inlets are usless on stock turbos.

Cranked timing to the moon. Turned off knock detection blaming the stock dmfw for "false" misfires. Blew compression on 2 cylinders, then blamed jb4 for not logging timing.

Busted making fake compressor maps on the audi world.

Posted pictures of cast manifolds with serious casting problems.

Claims his turbos are made in china, then he takes them apart and re balances them, in house,

Then emails leaked from vtt that someone else was doing that for him, then stopped dealing with doug, due to his shady buisness practices.

Multiple people start joining the forums and thier first post is praising frankenturbo quality.

Doug claims has nothing to do with it, then it's revealed he offers $500 discount for dyno runs from beta testers.

I think some of these "haters" me included in that group i assume, are hoping this doesn't turn into another hexon.

Maybe he can make some reliable turbos, maybe he has no clue how these turbos work. Given the facts i posted above, I'm leaning towards he has no idea.

How many beta testers are there? How many of those have failed? We will likley never know.
I know the answer to both those questions. It's not my place to talk about who the beta testers are. I can tell you that there are average Joe guys and very reputable and well known N54 community members.

In regard to the turbos, these things were delayed due to many changes. If you tear these apart and compare them to any of the other guys slingin mud and chinese turbos simultaneously, you'll see some very big differences. Go take a look at the Frankenturbo FB page or contact Doug via email through his website. He's good to talk with one on one.

i dont know, like 10 years ago doug caught flack in the audi/vw community but since 2010 i haven't really read/heard any complaints. lots of happy customers in the 1.8,2.0, b5s4. the fact is only time will tell. there is a reason so many people went with singles, the reliability wasn't there with twins, could some be chaulked up to instal error and using old oil line, maybe. but one thing is for sure:
Every company making upgraded twins has had MANY failures. published or not in the past, possibly from users trying to squeeze 30+psi out of stock frames,. hopefully the new cast from various manufacturers make the grade. they are all made in china so pick your choice. too bad we couldn't just bolt up K04's and call it a day.

I have to agree foe. I read all Doug’s “repeat” testing everything and found it had its ups and downs. You can’t trust others research and if he came to some or most of the same conclusions, oh well. I can’t wait to see the data and the responses from the beta testers.

Part one, which we will call "He's as Dishonest as they come"

The more you talk Doug, the more this gets released. The part where you send him the now Defunct Hexon Turbos to copy is pretty entertaining. Maybe we will do that one next. The full conversion is over an hour long, I am sure you can imagine how much fun stuff is in there, if this is in the first 2.5 minutes...

Keep in mind this conversation was had in 11/2016, when Doug was full swing of trying to develop his BMW turbos.

I remember when Doug sent those Hexon's out to some nameless guy to have them torn apart. I know what two cars they came off of. In fact, my shop at the time removed them to be warrantied by Wayne at Hexon who probably never paid the final bill. I know why he sent them to this random guy who isn't the guy that assembles his turbos. He wanted to see what the competition was doing for these turbos. That guy on the phone isn't even the guy who assembles Doug's turbos.
Again, not my place to talk but there's a lot behind the scenes here that Tony is only touching on to try and throw shade.

Listen Tony, you're a bright guy. You've got your business and he's got his. He's been in the compressor game in the VW world ( a market you're trying to enter) for years. My suggestion is that you do your biz and let him do his. At some point, the tiny world of forum business isn't going to be the only group of people you piss off and at that point, your business will suffer. Sure, the forums don't control business but they sure are an insight into how business is done and right now, you just look like a guy that talks a lot of smack while hiding behind a keyboard.

Oh some nameless guy? BAHAHAHAHA! By nameless guy you mean "Turbocharger Systems" in Scappoose, OR who built all his turbos. The nameless guy that has been in business for over 19 years, and has a 5 star rating with BBB that nameless guy? This conversation is well over a year old. Doug may have burned another bridge with someone trying to work with him, and moved on, as it sounds he does frequently with people get tired of his shit. I will be interested to hear your comebacks when the really good parts of the conversation are posted. Stay tuned!
