Has anyone done this? Seems to me that the standard design is poor and a remote water to oil cooler and oil filter housing would make the engine bay look a lot better as well as create some space for better inlet manifold runners... Youd need to weld bungs on the head but..

You wouldn't have to weld anything to the head. Just make an adapter plate, tap it for -an fittings and plumb your way out.

So you want to delete the entire housing? I think I remember someone talking about making a racing inspired part that accomplishes this but that was some time ago. Also, your options once you've deleted this aren't nearly as interesting as items such as the Mossleman and its interchangeable thermostat elements:

The Motiv 135 race car has an ofh delete, but they're also running a dry sump setup.

@Jason@Propulsive-Dynamics runs the thermostat. A couple companies make fancy oil coolers like that, I think there is an expensive one for the M3 also which fits in that spot.

I'm not sure which core they use, but it sure is clean. Doubt the stock ducts hook up right though.
