Another post about coils...but this one is good. Read it.
Lets backtrack, Bimmer Life first to release any kind of "upgraded" coil. Precision Raceworks coils released shortly after both are great sets of coils, back by some really awesome companies and people.

I finally decided to order the PR set on my birthday, June 16th. I messaged Robert about a set, told him it was my BDay, I purchased and next day I had the set(I only live 3 hours from him). Installed along with a new set of 95770 @ .026 gap, started up, working great. Few days later the MHD option was released. Awesome, lets check it. Flashed the car and everything was going great. Then 3 days later I decide to get on it, and misfire. WTH? Pull codes, 4,5,6 misfire. Clear it keep going. Again, and again.

Then 2 days after this, blew a Mosfet. Great, MSD80 POS. Anyway had it towed to a friends show and the mosfet replaced. Get the car back, still have 4,6 Misfires. We check them out, the wires from the PR set had popped off, no biggie. Crimped them with pliars, re attached. Back on the road. Get on it, boom. #3 misfire. At this point I'm like WTF? I start contacting people. Robert, Justin. All for assistance. Both were there for me to help anytime I asked a question. I replace the plug in #3, go out to test, boom #6 misfire. Replace that plug, still misfire. Move the coil, still misfire. Ok, great. My injectors(I still had index 5). Replaced them injectors, reset all adaptations. Get on it, #4 misfire!? REALLY!? Replace that plug, #5 MISFIRE, At this point I'm so annoyed with these coils, I want to take them off. Nothing is working. I just want to enjoy my car.

Robert gets me to test the coils ohm resistance, all fine. Robert and Justin think its my Mosfets. So I send Robert my DME to replace all the mosfets to New Fairchild ones. At this point I have pulled the coils off the car, as it was so bad, just everyday driving would misfire. When I was putting the stock coils back on, I did a compression test just to make sure it wasn't a jacked motor. Compression 165/170 across the board.

Then I start thinking, and contact Alex Fuller. Give him a rundown of whats going on. He offers me a deal I cant refuse on his set of coils. He gets me his coils. I installed them(10min) install, wow. I also installed a new OEM set on n20 plugs, left the gap alone. Started up and smooth. Very smooth. Ok, lets go for a drive. PR set was very smooth as well on start up. Let the car warm up. At this point ive flashed back to my pump gas map thinking something is still wrong. Now this is with Bimmerlife coils, new mosfets, new injectors, new plugs. NOTHING SHOULD GO WRONG.
My oh my. My car had come to life again. Id never felt it pull so hard on pump gas. I was FLOORED!!. Ok so give them a few days on driving, same as my PR set. All fine, NO HICCUPS PERIOD. Go back to my 23psi e40 map. HOLY GOD. I know my car isnt that fast, but its the fastest I've ever driven.

Bottom line here, my car did not like the PR coils, and LOVES the BL coils. If you want a set of coils, you cannot go wrong with the BL coils.

Both companies are bad ass, both guys who run them are smart as hell, and helpful as hell. I dont want to turn this into a pissing match. Just sharing my experiences, and suggestions.

From my experience and my vehicle, the BL coils work better for me.

So what gap are you running on the N20 plugs? I assume you're running the MHD settings but have the BL box checked instead?

They are are OEM BMW n20 plugs, that are pre gapped. Everywhere I've read they were .031 gap.

Very interesting! That is a big gap, great to hear they are running good! I have the same coils, gapped at .018 as I used them on gas with stock coils.

Reasoning behind...? I do not have the PR kit anymore.
Sorry I'll say that a little more detailed lol

The reasoning why your car liked the BL kit but not the PR.. I can't help but think that it wasn't the kit but more so an under lying issue that was exacerbated by the PR Coils.. You know the whole experience so it's kinda messed up for us to say nope it wasn't the coils ya know..
I'm thinking possible just maybe poor engine grounding but that's grasping for straws

Honestly without knowing exactly how the BL is designed I really have no clue but I hope someone from BL can explain..

You had either a pre-existing condition brought to the surface by the PR kit, or you installed them wrong. More likely than not the latter.

On a side note, I'm making significantly more power than OP, and my PR kit is performing flawlessly. Not to mention it's a better designed kit with better coils.

I honestly don't know why. But once the mosfet blew it was downhill. Nothing I did seem to work. And my wife was getting pissed at me just throwing money hoping it would fix it. Plugs, injectors. So I just went back to stock and I knew they work perfectly at .022 gap. And they did. Misfires we're gone.

They weren't installed wrong. 4 sets of eyes looked over them. And like I said they worked great for a week before the mosfet blew. But upon testing all mosfets were fine and all coils we're fine. That is why we are all baffled as to why. No one can figure it out.

You signature says 470whp. That's not more power. But quite a bit less than me. And how do you just go in a thread and say I'm making more power than the OP with me stating absolutely nothing what's done to my car. 99% of people have zero issues on the PR coils. They are a GREAT set. I just have Gremlins in my car that don't like them.

I for one would like to know the pros and cons of each type, smart vs dumb coils. All i get so far, smart coils (BL) easier/quicker install and a load off the dme, readily available r8 coils...dumb coils (PR), can be run without flash, supposedly should run more flawlessly since n54 is designed for dumb coils ....any1 else any other pros/cons?

Can I ask what all comes in the BL kit? Is it coils an a harness and the rest is done in mhd? Are they adapted to fit length wise does it look or do they look exactly like an r8 coil?
