MHD OTS N54 maps..why does a stage 2 map offer less gains than stage 1+

So my 2011 Z4 35is N54 was stock..did 345BHP 500nm on my go to dyno..

Stage 1+ did 390 BHP and 560nm

Fitted new index 12 injectors (old set of 5 index 9 and 1 index 12)

Plus new NGK coils and VSRF downpipes .

Then re-map to MHD 2+ and xHP stage 2.

just been out on initial shake down runs.

Car misfired when midrange foot to the floor acceleration from around 80 mph..engine light on and vibration.

Protool said engine misfire cylinders 1 and 2 ..no other codes..

Since I was 300 miles from home by roadside I decided to flash stage 2 to see if that stopped the mis fire…so far no issue..but…

Then noticed MHD states

  • Stage 1 (up to 360HP/520NM) - 91oct/95ron, 93oct/98ron, 95oct/102ron, for stock cars.
  • Stage 1+ (up to 390HP/600NM) - 91oct/95ron, 93oct/98ron, 95oct/102ron, FMIC recommended.
  • Stage 2 (up to 380HP/560NM) - 91oct/95ron, 93oct/98ron, 95oct/102ron, high-flow downpipes recommended.
  • Stage 2+ (up to 420HP/650NM) - 91oct/95ron, 93oct/98ron, 95oct/102ron, high-flow downpipes + FMIC recommended.
So why would you have a stage 2 instead of a 1+?..less BHP n NM?

As an aside any suggestions on cylinder 1 n 2 misfire?

I'd assume stage 1+ is making more power as IAT's stay lower with a intercooler. Stage 2 probably suffers from high Iat's. In regards to your misfire, what are your plugs gapped to. Would you have a log?

Hello thanks for your reply…misfire happened on the freeway where there is no stopping..so limped about 10 miles to rest area.

Wasn’t in a mindset to do much as still 100 miles to get to my night halt.

So just did a read with Protool..reset and then a stage 2 flash and tried ‘linear’ throttle whilst I was there.

So no logs..

Plugs are new NGK one stage cooler as recommended with stock gaps (about 30 thou? )

Omitted to state stage 1+ was stock FMIC…stage 2+ is with Wagner Evo 1 FMIC..

Outside air temp around 13c..

Maybe try tightening the gap. I run NGK 97506's in both my cars gapped to 22thou (0.022)

Different mod requirements. Stage 1+ requires FMIC and 2 just needs downpipes.
The requirements can be taken with a grain of salt, even the stock FMIC can keep up in cold ambient temps.

The misfire could be anything. You need to get some data logs for anyone to have input.

Common causes are old plugs or bad coils. If injectors are new then install errors are possible, a bad injector seal or missing decoupler can cause those kinds of misfires.

You can clear codes with mhd, protool,jb4 and your missfires will go away without having to pull over

Thanks guys..once I’m closer to home I’ll ‘provoke’ the misfires and then see what the logs say..I’ve not yet played with logging so forgive any newbie teething issues 🙈
