So Ebay is running a 15% off deal today only (Code PRONTO15). One adds the item to one's cart, then in the checkout process one can add the promo code and see if discount applies. Guys ... go to town.
So on my list is the Hakko FX-951 w/ 1.6mm tip. I have a nice Pace lab soldering iron, and I use a 45W Weller for grounds ... but I've had the opportunity to play with my buddy's FX-951 and it is the cat's meow. I don't need an iron, so I've had this in cart waiting for a deal. Today is that deal day. $256 for the station with 1.6mm tip, $38 off from eBay. Not getting any better than that. Among other things this goes to full temp in like 5 seconds from picking up the wand, and no more need to fire up the second ground soldering iron as the Hakko packs the punch necessary for that job. I do a lot of work on amps and guitars since I'm in that business, and heat dissipation on ground contact surfaces can be an issue. Automotive-wise, not so much an issue in my experience.
If you are looking for a high-end, non-rework soldering station, this product is consider to punch well above its weight class, $-wise. Typical Japanese quality.
On Hakko ... be careful of China watch replica versions. I'm buying from an authorized dealer.
