SHOOTOUT.jpg
At Precision Raceworks we insist on pushing limits with both testing and innovation. Those that have followed us over the years have seen that we never make claims we always provide data. Well when Walbro came out with the new 525LPH pump after decades of the reliable industry leading 450LPH we knew it was time to fire up the flow bench again.

Since we were going to be doing some pump testing we decided to pick up a couple DW400 pumps to test against the new Walbro 525 and have a shootout. Since the Walbro 450 is the industry standard across all auto platforms we decided it should be used as a baseline for testing.

To give a little back history we never offered the DW400 or even tested one as based on the test data provided by Deatschwerks the flow was marginally better than the Walbro 450 and cost almost double! The smart move would be to run two Walbro 450 pumps as they cost about the same as a single DW400 and flow significantly more then the marketed data Deatschewerks claims for their single pump.

We could literally do a full write up of all the false information shared about the DW400 from “collaborating with Bosch” to false flow data. Last we checked grinding off a part number so people don’t know what it is, isn’t exactly innovative or collaborative.

Sorry we got sidetrack this isn’t DW400 bashing post it is a shootout so let’s see numbers!!

I spoke with DW via email. Guy basically told me that if I wanted to run 2 dw400’s that both pumps would need check valves. I asked what check valves they recommend for E85 and he sent me an amazon link for a “fuel safe” check valve that from the limited research I’ve done wasnt safe for use with E85..... kinda turned me off from using their pumps.

Thanks @PRECISION RACEWORKS for your post!

Nice been waiting for this review, so how much hp can this new walbro 525 support?

Honestly even though the new Walbro 525 is out and tested it wouldn't be our recommendation for most applications. The pump at $200ea is still well below the output you get from dual 450's. Also the EKP is ever so slightly unhappy at the 18amps that a 450 draws we wouldn't recommend adding 4 more amps to it as it will become unstable. That is our opinion however we will most likely be offering it as we need the pumps for another platform outside of BMW world. I would say it will probably be a special request thing through email since we don't really advise it but we can do it if people insist.

Just from the graph looks like a 10-12% flow increase at the 60-72 psi typical N54 fuel pressure.

That's on the low pressure side only though the HP supported would depend on the rest of your setup.

Still better options out there that are less $$ :) We won't share to much just yet that's for another thread maybe we can post that data later this week. So much to do so little time, but there are lots of options for any fuel goal.

Looking forward to it

Lol, when I started reading I was thinking the same thing. The DW pump outflows the Walbro by 31% as pressure rises.

I have a band new dw400 pnp kit for the stock bucket. My goal is 700whp+ on full E85 so im def following this thread. Might have to consider moving to a dual walboro 450

Your results are the opposite of DW and Fuel-It's results when testing both pumps, care to speculate why?

Did you ever get a response to this? I would like to know why as well.

Fuel-it and others had same test results we did; not different. We don't care what DW publishes as "results" they do not make the pump only scratch off P/N and laser their name on it. We are authorized Bosch distributor and also authorized Walbro distributor both companies confirmed our findings.

You can also note that all companies offering fuel pumps are now offering Walbro 525 pump since we posted this article. It is the highest flowing pump available on the market and a much better choice than the DW400. The only problem with the 525 is the amp draw which time will tell if it is truly a problem for the EKP.

What voltage were these tests done at? I'm curious what the delta is by testing at 13v instead of say 14v?

Alternator voltage has a few variables including battery type.

Real street has a good test and results with different voltage.

Overall walbro 450 or 525 kills everything.

We have done recent tests on everything. The 525 is king but has a big draw. The DW400 is good for the amp draw, but is more expensive. The new Brushless DW should be awesome for newer stuff. We are on the beta to get one to test in our RS3. We also ordered the new 535 Walbro from our supplier and will run a test when it arrives.

Are you saying the DW400 outflows the walbro 450 bucketless? If so, that agrees with fuel-its testing. You think the 450 will support 600hp with proper mods? I have stage 2 +hybrids running e40-e45 tune, 22.5psi 12°-13° timing. I don't plan on exceeding 24ish psi though. See screenshot of fuel-its testing.
