Any Intake Scoop Ideas for Single Turbos?

Anyone have any intake ideas for those of us running single turbos? When I converted the car originally, I had the 335D intake scoop in hand, but soon found out it wouldn't fit without modification, and ended up selling it. I have seen people take a dremel to these and make them work, but are there any other options?

I've also seen some independents and companies such as DocRace explore that area for a coolant reservoir relocation spot, which I'm not opposed to.

Just not a fan of the current look as it leaves the top of the radiator fan exposed.

btw I run the BMS shorty filter -- it was just off in this picture for cleaning.

The 335D air dam fits E9X cars, but not our E82 1-series. I tried as well. You and I are both rocking the open gap. I'd love to see what other 1-series guys are doing, but I haven't seen much. Most single turbo kits are on the E9X 3-series chassis.

Do you think the 335D airdam actually makes a difference?

So you install this and then cut off the end so it points at the air filter?

Seems like a good way to get your filter dirtier quicker...

Not sure if a little bit of fresh cooler air is really worth it(or matters) after it goes through the compressor and than IC.

Thoughts?

The one I ordered from ECS did not include the end part you have pictured, so essentially all the work was done for you. For E9X guys, it sounds like it just bolts right on.

In all honesty, it does probably not make any difference and would probably result in getting your filter dirtier quicker. The more I think about it, the more I want to switch to a coolant overflow reservoir up there instead of a scoop, eliminate a large amount of the wiring and the long coolant reservoir heater hose running from the driver's side.

The main reason would be mostly for aesthetics.

do the 1 series diesel cars from the UK not come with something that would fit for you?

Hmmm...it looks like the diesel version of the 1 series cars come with an interesting looking front scoop that connects directly to the front inlet holes that feed from the kidney grills. Does not seem to be compatible though.

I was just going to pull the inner fender for track use.
Figure it has to help some right?

So you are sending me your air dam as you have no use for it, is that what I read?

Not best looking, but i cut it in middle and extended it. As for how effective it is, i dont know. I still need to make a enclosed box for the filters, at least thats the plan from the start.

Atm 335d intake box is real nice may give idea, my mechanic cut hood and it feeds the inverted part of the filter

@iminhell1 No, keep your fender liner. The increase in drag won't offset any gain in air

IMO the best routing options are either relocating oil cooler to driver side and fabbing tube to passenger bumper duct or using the old Dinan CAI routing that was able to reach from engine bay to driver side bumper duct.
ATM makes a box to isolate 335D intakes which would also do well at keeping intake isolated from engine heat but would likely need some trimming but the idea is solid.

You could route it into the fender like most cars do with cold air intakes (probably have to cut something to do this) or buy a vented hood and route it up to that.

A hood like this.

Vented hoods are to remove air. Low pressure air across your hood acts as a vacuum.
There's a high pressure zone at the windshield but no way to route ducts. There was a guy who did a pseudo cowl induction set up years and years ago but was "meh" at best.

Thats true, but if you completly mate a tube to the hood vent and connect it to your turbo without any leaks this would make the turbo suck in the air from the vent providing cooler air. This only works if this is 100% sealed though.

you'd be best off having hood vents stay as air removers and then supply a feed source and then enclose the system. Last thing you want is to do is flood the engine bay with more air that you can't effectively remove.
