That's a big win, I don't get why he won't just sell you it and let you be on your way. See I'm concerned I'm going to give him my money and then be forced to wait without answers
I hear you. All the comments you see online are how awesome and helpful he is, so I feel like i'm a one-off for some reason, but who knows🤷‍♂️

As a businessman, he should be glad for the opportunity to convert some non-moving inventory into cash.

Yes seems like an odd situation hopefully he just can sell you the parts lol

Why doesn't he sell you the parts and let the person who's gonna be installing them and tuning them deal with figuring it out? Unless the parts are part of the issue which i wouldn't understand why?
I told him that exact thing in my response. I told him no worries barring defective or missing kit parts, installation is between me and my installer, and tuning between me and whoever I pick to tune it.

Yeah, it's starting to make me wonder if there is some issue with the kit, because he's really pushing me away from it. I don't get it.

Yes that is a little concerning. Maybe there is some issues with the bracketing? Should be pretty straught forward the dme should be able tool control the efr pretty flawlessly so I honestly don't quite get it

On forums i've seen 1 or 2 guys who burned a hole in the silicone outlet tube where it contacted the manifild, but it sounds like they didn't have the compressor housing clocked right so it hit. And it looks like the new external gate bottom mount kits have the same style silicone outlet hose, so it seems between clocking right, and thermal wrap, it should be managable. Plus it seems like that's a risk on the new external gate kits too, so doesn't seem like a reason to push me away from the EFR kit.

Also, the engine coolant hose under the manifold is silicone, so probably need some good heat wrap there too - though I haven't seen any posted issues with that hose.

That is what i have noticed about the speedtech kits. They run the coolant hose so close to the manifold I have always been concerned about that. But I think with proper clocking the outlet shouldn't be anything to worry about

Well, I still haven't given up on Speedtech, but if I can't get my hands on one, maybe this is my huckleberry. Anybody familiar with 4n motorsports? Internally gated EFR based kit, woohoo!! With this kit I could move up past efr 7670 to 8474 (or bigger, but that would be overkill for my goals). Based on the compressor maps, I was already thinking efr 8374/8474 may be a better match for our 3 liter engines that the efr 7670. I don't know many details yet, but I'm excited to learn more😀 Sounds like there will be n54 and n55 kits, and a group buy coming up soon. I had to have my wife send me this screenshot because i'm not on instagram, haha😂🤣

Well @wheela is the x1 still stock turbo ?
And whens the 8 speed swap coming.
Yes, still stock turbo🙁 It's awesome this 4n option popped up, but it's brand new for n55, and information is sparse, even on the s55 side. I did find an active thread on f80 post of a guy who ordered the s55 version (he's still waiting for it), so i'm following that to see how it turns out.

I'm kind of letting this sit on the back burner for a while thinking about options, and if/what compromises I'm willing to make.

8hp swap? Maybe when you buy that second 5'er and do your 8hp swap😁😁😁

Why not go with the new Pure stage 3
I am very curious to hear details about that option once it's out👍 I know @houtan has a prototype one and is very happy with it. Sounds like they're making some improvements before they release it? Have no idea what that is?

But I still haven't given up on getting an EFR in there somehow. I'm partial to Borg Warner in general because I like playing with matchbot (i'm a geek like that). And EFR in particular because of the gamma titanium turbine, the diverter valve built into the compressor housing, ceramic ball bearings, and the internal wastegate so I can put a vacuum wastegate actuator on it.

FWIW I was super interested in Speedtech's EFR turbo kit as well. I worked for a company that developed their own TiAl material that we'd use for the F1 customers' exhaust valves and that stuff is wild how much heat it can handle. So anyways I was following Speedtech for the kit and such, and noticed maybe back around late last year they all of a sudden didn't have the EFR turbos listed on their kits anymore and they seemed to be difficult to find in kits of other suppliers. Most kits were basically the Precision 6266 gen2, but I'm curious what happened with the EFR turbos that they were all dropped so quickly?

Also after having some emails with I think Jeff at Speedtech (I might be wrong since I'm going off memory) he pretty much stopped even responding to my emails the second I mentioned I was in California. He wouldn't even do an order if the billing address was in CA but shipping to somewhere outside CA.

That sounds like a really interesting job!

Hard to say, if you look at other platforms EFR's are very popular. I'm not sure why they haven't taken off here. I suspect it's a combination of the high price, and that the benefits of the really light weight turbine (responsiveness) probably aren't really that apparent looking at a dyno graph.

From my emails with Jeff, it sounded like a lot of people had trouble getting the internal wastegate set up correctly, and it's hard to adjust after install because it sits between the turbo and engine block. He's really pushing external wastegates.

That's crazy about the CA billing address, I suppose there are legitimate concerns with liability though selling this kind of product there.

I'm guess i'm in a small minority of people who want to run the stock air box (at least for now), use stock vacuum boost control, but also want an off-the-shelf non-hybrid turbo.

Oh I don't know if this helps but Carabuser had me wire the Mac solenoid up in a way were he can control my wastegate using the factory dme and its boost maps. But with this method everything seems to work like factory. The only check engine light I have is for Reflex injector error as I'm not running PI.

Thanks for checking in! The Dorch stage 2 HPFP went on a black Friday sale, so I ordered one of those so I can feel like i'm making progress while I ponder turbo options.

So it sounds like your mac solenoid is wired to the reflex, and it's basically passing duty cycle from your DME to the mac (but at the 30Hz ish frequency vs. 300 Hz ish stock duty cycle)? I'm thinking of doing that, or potentially just running a boost solenoid right from the DME like hardparker was doing here:

I'm kind of bummed I may have to give up my hope for an internally gated EFR😕 I'll probably bug Jeff at Speedtech at some point and see if he'd be willing to do an externally gated kit with an EFR since the IG kit seems to be hitting a brick wall. I really like that 4n kit, but I'm having some trouble getting questions about it answered, and i'm a little paranoid about cracking going with a welded 304 manifold. Disclaimer: I haven't heard of any issues with their manifold, I just mean welded 304 turbo manifolds in general😉

Any thoughts on reliability with welded 304 manifolds? Maybe it's not that big of an issue, but the more I look into it, 321ss seems to be the way to go for longevity.

I guess another option is there is a fab shop local to me that seems highly capable. I could have them build what i'm looking for, but I can't imagine that would be cost or time effective? I guess I don't know until I ask...

Are you just using the reflex to drive your mac valve for now?
