Yes, the primer is very thin liquid... paint it onto both sides then put sealant in the groove like you're making a gasket. Just don't overdo it to the point it squeezes out into the block...
The injection process is basically bmws way of ensuring 100% seal with 0 chance of sealant causing a misalignment of the bed plate. It's not necessary though.
