Off to a slow start. Made sure I was free for the next couple of hours, connected my charger, downloaded app, plugged err in annnnd vehicle not supported...

Sent Rayray a PM, but hopefully can get resolved fairly quick.

Ok, so my first impression was, "wow this is way quicker than my Alpina shift", but I think it's settled in or something because now it doesn't seem as snappy as it did this morning.. I'm flashing a new custom tune soon and gonna have Wedge help me maximize the potential of this.. I'm gonna try a full adaptation reset in INPA in the morning and I'll post back..

Resetting trans adaptations thru INPA? Not a good idea without an adaptation drive cycle post reset. Quick way to wear down your trans without one.


I'm still hitting a brick wall using it. No response to email or PM. Found this little gem on another forum
Concerning the "Retrieve vehicle details" issue:

This should be already fixed in the meantime, as it is related to the backend, not the app itself!

The coding bug:

This happens a lot since release, as many cars have being flashed in the past with WinkFP, but haven't been properly coded with NCSExpert afterwards. On newer cars this is obvious, because of the paddles not working, on older cars, this is not noticeable for the driver. Only if you retrieve the fault codes, you will have a "coding missing" error.

This prevents reading of the coding, which we do at the end of the backup. So that's the reason, why guys were sitting 30 minutes before their tablets and then got the error. We now changed that, so that this pops up immediately on start of backup. So that does not safe one, from coding his unit properly before applying xHP, but at least it is visible instant and get's messaged accordingly.

This issue never popped up the last 1.5 months, as it is very specific to 335i drivers using the Alpina flash.

For all those, who have NCS Expert, here's the way to code your TCU:

- Copy the file attached in your C:\NCSEXPER\PFL folder
- Start NCS
- Load Profile  Expertmode FSW PSW Manipulate ohne MAN
- Hit F2 (Chassis), Select E89
- Hit F1 VIN/ZCS/FA
- Hit F3 ZCS/FA f. ECU, select CAS
- Hit F6 (Back)
- Hit F4 (Process ECU), select EGS
- Hit F3 (Execute Job)
- Done


Wasted some more time going thru that process. Still nada.

So a buddy of mines wanted to see a video of the xhp stage 3 flash in action so I decided to share here. Let me start off by saying everything about this stage 3 map is great there is not one aspect of it I do not like. D mode starts off in first gear which I LOVE, however I wonder if this will adversely affect trans temps in traffic / stop and go. M mode shifts like butter.

PS this car makes 660whp and 550tq at full boost so I jumped straight to the stage 3 map and have no information on the other maps but if anyone wants to give me them I can take some more videos lol.

Here is a video of my fiances VTT GC powered e90 at 20psi. I would guess around 530-550 whp with matching tq (high boost map is having missfires most likely due to a bad injector)

Finally installed successfully. Had to completely reinstall bmw tools on my new laptop before I could sort out the alpina issues. Recoded the recommended files in NCS without issue. Battery drain was a bit of an issue since my tender is pretty weak, still waiting on my new CTEK charger to arrive but I made do. Stage 3 went on without issue. Made sure and gave the trans plenty of warm up time before I started fiddling with it.

Impressions compared to Alpina:
- D is MUCH improved. Shift points and reaction to inclines is excellent. I don't feel like a tortoise anymore waiting on my engine to warm up.
- S is aggressive and the logic is smart. It tends to hang the revs a bit after letting off and stays in gear much longer than before. Don't think I'll be spending too much time messing with S, it just feels weird to trust the car to select the appropriate gear during spirited driving. If you want the extra punch to move and get away from people, it's definitely a step up.
- M is snappy and strong. I'm not having issues with jolting but I can tell the trans needs a few more miles to get adapted to the new settings so I didn't push it too hard. Shifting seems about the same as Alpina in terms of reaction at the moment, but again, this could largely be because the car is still getting used to it. I'm going to avoid a trans adaptation reset as recommended unless it has issues sorting itself out on its own. I don't think it'll come to that but who knows, still too early to tell.

About pricing:
While it seems like a bit much to pay for the license and a flash together, I look at it in the sense that most custom DME flashes would run you about the same amount. Plus, you have the ability to completely customize a flash to your liking or have someone else dial in your individual setup.

With this platform continuing to drop in value and younger/inexperienced owners becoming more prevalent, it's easy to see why so many can't justify it for the money when they gripe about the cost associated with known maintenance items (injectors, waterpumps, etc) and will stick with Alpina. The fact is you can argue till you're blue in the knuckles on the boards/groups with the keyboard warriors but it just isn't worth it. If you're on the fence, give it some time and let this continue to develop. It's still really early in release and can only get better with time and more fiddling in the settings. Remember, the OTS maps are version 1.0 and the feedback from beta testers was pretty weak to say the least (based on everything that's been shown publicly anyway) so naturally there's going to be a few kinks.

I'll update on my end after I give the car some time to settle down a bit. Thanks.

Great review! One thing, the cost is only $20 more than MHD, as their flasher license is $99 vs $120. The difference here, is there are many ways to flash a custom DME tune, even for free, however there is no method to do the same for our TCU. Then as far as maps are concerned, you can pay your own tuner to make you a map just like with the DME, so for people on a budget I suppose they need to wait for a cheap TCU ProTune service to come out or make their own?

I'd agree with that. Obviously there's no guarantee that someone's protune service is going to be cheaper than the OTS maps but that also opens up another can of worms since there could be more personalized tweaking involved outside of xHP. If you're playing around on tunerpro and figuring out the mapping software yourself then that could potentially pay for itself by personal satisfaction on its own. Lots of variables at play with this stuff and that's a good thing in the long run. Something the Alpina flash simply doesn't have.

For people who have upgraded turbos, taking it past 6800 by itself is worth the money. I bet a lot of the people complaining are running out of steam by 5500 and wonder why the stage 3 map doesn't work well on their tired transmission. The rest of them are basing their judgement off of comparison videos of two totally different cars.

Alpina simply can NOT be faster than xHP. Because you can flash an identical map with it. I would ask those people, how could it be faster? Alpina is a calibration and xHP is a technology and tool. The notion that people are able to make some determination of this by using comparison videos of different cars making vastly different power is asinine.

What these people really mean, is they purchased the wrong map or failed to make a custom calibration. I'd go out on a limb and say most of these people would be better off with a stage 2 or some custom concoction.
