N54 vs B58

I've seen a lot of races between N54 and B58 cars. I've been wondering what peoples thoughts are here. Personally I seem to be under the impression that it's more the 8 speed trans that's making the B58's easier to make fast. Both motors seem to hold about the same levels of power safely.

b58 would be a lot cheaper to upgrade than n54 and more reliable.

I still have a soft spot for n54 but can't deny the attractiveness of the b58 easy upgrade path.

See i believed in this Until i put 2 cars on a Stage 2 340 in my 535i. @carabuser can vouch for me here my cars not tuned very aggressively either. The internet really makes it seem like B58 cars are by far faster then N54 cars but i think its more the pick their races 😂. A manual B58 car vs a Manual N54 car would be a great race.

Yeah but the b58 will be more reliable and consistent than the n54. Get an auto b58 and the n54 doesn't stand a chance except maybe to the rare dct equipped n54.

The thing is will it tho? B58 cars have issues too. Failing injectors (which in a lot of cases have lead to hurt engines), gasket leaks, vanos, A few other issues that aren't as common.
Get an auto b58 and the n54 doesn't stand a chance except maybe to the rare dct equipped n54.
Says otherwise. Idk a well put together N54 can get down even on stock turbos. My car hurts feelings on Friday and Saturday nights, and then proceeds to be daily driven the rest of the week. I've raced a few cars here locally in my family sedan and it seems to deliver. Once my tunes 100% the plan is to line up beside the upgraded turbo 340 here and see how bad the gap is. Only issues I've had is a old coil pack failed, ended up replacing all 6 with eldors. That's excluding all the maintenance I've done.

I had 3 x #12 injectors fail and they weren't even 6 months old, on the single turbo kit mate is on his 3rd set on his n54 and 4th fuel pump, when you wanna play you have to pay LOL.

But generally all engines will fail because people don't know how to read/feel their engine and they just send it or keep pushing their car when its misfiring hoping it will fix itself, seen it one to many times.

Who drives a stock N54?

Correct a lot of folks don't even stop when cars start misfiring. Trust me i've broken my far share of shit playing 😂

Hybrids? where? last time i checked there's stock sized 10t's in my car. And you @RuskiRacer know my fuel system is completely stock.

You never mentioned mods vs mods.
Kinda pointless unless you are comparing stock vs stock.
Too many variables.
Now it sounds like you are comparing your car vs a upgraded turbo 340i ???
Im confused.

B58 makes more power from factory
B58 makes more torque from factory
B58 cars have better trans from factory.

But it basically went like this:

N54 started it all. It is the OG. Still has records and b58 has not broken yet right? Great.

The main reason the b58 is doing so 'well' is the chassis(supra) it has been put into.

One would hope the b58 is an advance over the n54. It came out 10 years later and after the 'gen 2 n54' aka n55 which was the 'unsuccessful' successor to the n54 in many people's opinions.

The order of engines goes like this in MY opinion:
N54 S55 S58
N55 B58

The S58 blows the fucking B58 out of the water. The Supra does not get the S58(yet).

Which is the better 'engine' is up to you. All made by BMW so you know there will be some dumb fuckery somewhere. Opinions are like assholes. Everyone has one.

You really think a N55 is superior to the B58? Not saying your wrong or its a bad thing, just curious why you think this way. And your 100% correct the B58 wasn't big until the supra came out and then development for the platform began. LOL whoops

Edit: yes ik i tend to start topics that are based on opinion. But it makes for good conversation.

Im just confused by the title of thread.
Are you asking what is more reliable? (N54 vs B58), what is more mod friendly ?, What is stronger ?
Which Is stronger from factory/ which which you can extract more power out of without going boom the third pull
