N54 Custom Tuning Solutions

Hello, I'm new to the forum but not new to N54's. I had a 335i from 2010-14 and a 535ixT 6mt from 2014-present. I am an engine calibration engineer by trade and was looking for some help to tune my own car.

Coming back into the scene after a few years of forum absence, it seems a lot has changed for custom tuning solutions and I would love some help in clarifying what's available.

The only ones I know for sure are end user tuneable are the Cobb with Race Software and a custom wired Motec M1.

Now that I have a xDrive car, I'd also be interested in any tuning solutions available for transfercase control, if there are any.

As far as ECU tuning, the current most popular software is MHD (http://mhdtuning.com/mhd-flasher-n54/). Map editing is through TunerPro, and the XDFs are all publicly available on GitHub (https://github.com/dmacpro91/BMW-XDFs).

My car is manual and RWD, so I can't help you too much regarding the rest, but I know a lot of the automatic guys use XHP flasher (https://www.xhpflashtool.com/en/).

I actually spoke to xHP and it looks like currently they only have awd on/off capability now, but they are working on the full functionality.

MHD for custom tuning. You can self tune flash only or stacked with a JB4. Work off your original bin for flash only and a BMS BEF for JB4

You could also run MHD OTS tunes (stage 1, 2, 1+, 2+, e mix) but those maps are locked and not editable.

welcome to forum , by saying awd on/off means we can convert an awd car to a rwd by tuning solution ? If so, that’s unbelievable!!

Thank you! Yes, my understanding is that xHP has that ability through calibration/tuning.

MHD for dme, tune with your factory bin or any base floating around for your particular dme using the matching xdf (definition file with known public tables) through Tuner Pro.

XHp for trans in the same way, there's public xdf for the trans, load with your trans bin file into Tuner Pro and go ham.

I toyed with it but I think they did a great job on the maps already. Maybe if the PD cars can hold the power and people start toying with various converters it might be nice.

I think customization is a must with pd trans as I can hold alot more torque on shifts now. I just don't know if I could do even better with making my own map with public xdf

Yes it would. That’s why the new M xDrive cars have that button. It’s cool.
