Alright ... I have not been posting on this thread much. That's going to be changing as a lot of work has been in progress. It has just not been far enough along that I felt I should start sharing - this is because a bunch of the work I'm doing now, along with @barry@3DM , @Seb335i , @NoQuarter , @Lurcher and others has been along the lines of research, design, make, etc ... no point in posting complete BS.

A tremendous amount of this work has been in concert with Barry @ 3DM Motorsport. This includes new suspension (beyond the existing Öhlins R&T setup, which I really like), complete new brake setup (which I believe will be the first of its kind on the Z4 and natively retaining EMF rear with factory parts), and a few other things.

I am going to try a different route, and start separate threads on subjects, so they are not so buried in this build thread. Then I will just post a link here, for those major sub-threads. Hopefully this allows others to more easily find useful information.

It's really amazing how much iterative information is required to land at an optimal result and due to those options, all previous information and decisions are relevant. This contributes to a lengthy post and I suspect you'll have quite a bit of information here for people to chew on. Even more interesting because you're likely the only person in the world who will publish it in this detail.

Since May 2018, all new cars sold in the US and Canada have been required to come with a backup camera. And for good reason: park assist cameras can make parking considerably quicker and easier, while protecting those around you and preventing your vehicle from being damaged. Many pre-2018 beamer cars, however, didn’t come fitted with a rear view camera, meaning their owners are unfortunately missing out on what is now a standard feature. If that’s the position you find yourself in, adding a BMW backup camera is simple. As long as you have an iDrive dashboard display, a premium aftermarket rear view camera kit will even let you see the image from the camera right on the dash. It’s just like having a camera installed in the factory.

OEM BMW parts or aftermarket parts?
With so many camera kits to choose from, finding the right one for your needs isn’t always easy.

Perhaps the first choice to make is between an OEM camera kit — made up of genuine BMW parts — or an aftermarket alternative. The former is a perfect match for a factory-installed camera kit, including all the same original parts. The latter uses third-party components, which can reduce cost. A well-designed aftermarket RV camera for BMW will still match the quality of a factory-original camera, though, and offer the same level of integration with your vehicle.

OEM BMW Backup Camera Retrofits are some of our most popular kits, and cover both BMW original and high-quality aftermarket options. These DIY kits let anyone handy with a screwdriver install, upgrade, and retrofit your Backup Camera with the goodies you’ve been dreaming about. And we’re here to help, from choosing the perfect kit to factory programming if necessary.

OEM-Integration Rear View Camera Retrofit
This backup camera retrofit kit uses your BMW’s factory iDrive screen and camera mode, so you get the same look and feel as a factory-installed cam, with nearly the same picture quality — at a much lower price. We designed the kit to match the BMW OEM camera kit as closely as possible, including mounting the camera module in a custom trunk handle, just like the factory rear view camera. The result is an uninterrupted look inside and outside your vehicle, indistinguishable from a factory-original park assist camera.

If your BMW features PDC, the proximity warnings will appear as usual on the right side of the screen. If not, you will simply see a car diagram without any sensor information. In most vehicles, our OEM-Integration camera displays dynamic parking lines over the image from the camera. These parking lines curve with your steering wheel, making it easier to back up.

I took this car on as a learning project. Productivity is a by-product. I've shared what I see (and learn) - certainly some of it is sub-optimal to wrong! But the sharing is in the hopes of giving back a little to a community that has given me a lot.

I've been trying to figure out, lately, how to start threads as themes, then link them back into this "master thread", so it's more easy to get to vertical info that people may be more likely to leverage.

I have a lot apart right now ... hoping to get to "done" on a variety of things with others, so we can get the information up. It's hard to decide when to start posting. My rule to date has been, when we've gone far enough to think we may have a solution, and feedback into the process is possible.

As someone who is brand new to the E89 (just picked up my 2011 35i last week, coming from a 2009 stage 2 335i), this thread is incredible! Thanks for documenting everything for us, Filippo.. Hopefully I can pick your brain once I start moving things over to the Z.

What sway bar end links do you use? Parts of Z4 or M3? 31356765933/31352283442?
As far as I know, in M3 the part is longer and does it fit in Z4? Does length matter? If women are asked then yes 😁 Does the part have any difference other than length? Stiffer maybe? Your Z4 looks really great 👍

With Öhlins R&T setup - stock front, custom rear (adjustability issue with the sway bar). With the Öhlins TTX setup, fronts are custom and the rears were improved from the first gen custom.
